When you pick fat burn on the eliptical your target heart rate is lower. When you pick cardio your heart rate will be higher. I am a personal trainer and I always have my clients do cardio. You need to find your training heart rate. Take 220 minus your age. That will equal your max heart rate. Then with your max heart rate number multiply it by 55-75% 55 is more of your fatburning zone and 75 is your cardio zone. good luck

Cardio: works mainly you circulatory system meaning you exert more pressure on your lungs and heart more high impact!!!
Fat burn: is slower which allow your body to use fat cells as energy… meaning, your body needs enough oxygen to use fat as energy.. but as your health improves you can burn fat on cardio selection… good way to tell proper fat burn is this
    220 – (your age) =(result) x 65% – 70% target heart rate!!!

While the above are correct, it is a popular myth that you have to go slower to burn fat. You will burn fat regardless of which mode you select. However, when you are working harder, the body relies on anaerobic routes to create energy due to limitations of oxygen delivery. As a by-product, lactic acid is produced. This is the “burn” you feel when you are really pushing yourself. (The heart is one of the few muscles that is not able to produce energy without oxygen.) Once the activity stops, the lactic acid is broken down and the lactate is removed from the body via the lungs and kidneys. Nonetheless, this route is less efficient that standard mode of energy generation (via the Citric Acid Cycle and Electron Transport Chain. If you are curious about the steps in each, I recommend doing a search on the internet. It’s fairly complicated stuff and well beyond the scope of this forum.)
