The doctors who are in charge of eye health are a group of professionals who first obtain a bachelor's degree and then compete for one of the highly valued positions in an optometric program in the United States. Only twenty professional programs for training exist at present. The post graduate program requires a total of four years of training beyond the baccalaureate degree.

Coursework is varied, but is highly slanted toward science and anatomy, specifically of eyes, as might be expected. Both organic chemistry and biochemistry is included in the courses. Also included within the curriculum is biology and physics. Most schools require coverage of many subjects, including psychology, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, statistics and calculus. Biology and physics must be mastered by students in the post-graduate program leading to the degree.

Other topics covered by those working toward an optometric degree include systemic diseases, general pathology, sensory psychology, statistics, human anatomy, general pharmacology, microbiology, perceptual psychology biochemistry and epidemiology. More specific to the profession, students study and train in both the classroom and clinical practices. The courses cover classes such as vision screening, vision performance, design and modification of general vision, movement and vision perception, space, form, color, binocular vision, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, ocular pharmacology, ocular disease, ocular anatomy, and optics.

Once the course work is completed, the graduate has the decree, but must complete a test that is nationwide. Doctors will also participate in continuing education courses. The scope of practice for profession in general has expanded over time.

Although optometrists are known as doctors, their ability to prescribe is somewhat limited. In all states of the United States, the Doctors of optometry can license to treat diseases of the eye. O. D. S can use topical drugs in nearly every state. They can diagnose most conditions of the eye, vision, and even vision information systems. Optometrists can even perform certain types of laser and other surgeries to alleviate conditions of the eye and eyelid.

Perhaps the most common activity that the general public associates with optometrists is that of prescribing and fitting lenses that are intended to improve vision. This was the original scope of optometric physicians, . This professional is the primary eye care individual for most patients, in the same way that dentists focus on the teeth and oral health.

The field of optometry continues to grow as tools and knowledge about vision increases. Doctors today are able to access better diagnostic tools and better techniques to improve vision in patients. Where there is a need, optometrists will refer patients to other health care providers.

If your prefer to swim breaststroke, backstroke or even sidestroke is not important. Exerting your energy is. Socializing

Exercising is a great way to socialize with friends or meet new ones. Obviously if you are swimming laps it is difficult to talk while your face is under water but at the end of the pool and a coffee afterwards can add so much to your life. Often the winter months see you stay inside and not get out and socialize, but getting to a heated pool will get you out and about. Socializing is an important part of a balanced lifestyle to keep our minds healthy.

Rehabilitation

Recovering from injuries or strenuous exercise is another benefit the water can give you. If you have been running for an extended period and you want your legs to recover then walking in water can help speed up your recovery. Walking in colder water, especially salt water can help your muscles repair from strenuous activity. If you have been injured then the water can be part of your rehabilitation. The buoyancy of the water takes so much weight off you joints that you may be able to swim or walk in the water to help you get back to full strength.

The benefits of swimming are too large to ignore. Whether it is warm or cold you can venture into the water and receive some fantastic advantages for your physical and mental health. Exercising in a low-impact environment will allow you to reap the full benefits of your work.
