Women endangered by high rate of false-positive mammograms

(NaturalNews) According to mainstream medicine, mammograms are the key to surviving breast cancer because they supposedly catch the disease early for quick treatment. What this advice invariably leaves out is evidence that exposure to the radiation used in the tests may actually cause breast cancer in some women. For example, a study presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) concluded annual mammography screening significantly increases breast cancer risk in women with a genetic or familial predisposition to the disease (http://www.naturalnews.com/027641_mammograms_breast_cancer.html#ixzz1arooKmoK). Now there’s another reason to be concerned about the push for women to have yearly mammograms. In a new study by University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) research shows that among women who receive a decade of annual mammograms, more than half of those women will be called and told the gut-wrenching news that their tests are positive when they are actually cancer-free. The victims of false-positive results — not a malignancy — are then subjected to more tests. In fact, one in twelve of these women will undergo invasive, potentially breast-scarring biopsy surgery. “This study provides accurate estimates of the risk of a false-positive mammography and breast biopsy for women undergoing repeat mammography in community practice, and so provides important information about the potential harms of undergoing regular mammography,” states Karla Kerlikowske, a professor of medicine at the UCSF School of Medicine. Karla is also the co-author of the study, which was just published in the Annals of Internal Medicine . False-positive mammogram results are rampant The research, led by Group Health Research Institute of Seattle for the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium, investigated false-positives in mammography by studying the records of approximately 170,000 women between the ages of 40 and 59 from seven regions around the United States. Almost 4,500 of these research subjects were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. The study found that women who started having mammograms at age 40 instead of 50 were far more likely to have false-positive findings that resulted in more expensive and needless medical tests, including biopsies. Just by changing breast screening from every year to every other year, the researchers documented that a woman’s risk of having a false-positive finding dropped from 61 percent to 42 percent (about a third) over the course of ten years. What’s more, they found that if radiologists would simply review a patient’s previous mammograms it “may halve the odds of a false-positive recall.” The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidelines now recommend biennial mammograms starting at age 50 and continuing until age 74. However, many doctors still recommend annual mammograms, often beginning at age 40. The new study concluded that after a decade of yearly screening, a majority of women will receive at least one false-positive result. Out of these, 7 to 9 percent will face having a biopsy and the risks that involves — from anesthesia complications to scarring to infection — although these women are, in fact, cancer-free. And what about the argument that yearly mammograms are needed to catch cancer early enough to cure? The researchers found that women screened every two years were not significantly more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage cancer. “We conducted this study to help women know what to expect when they get regular mammograms over the course of many years,” study leader Rebecca Hubbard, PhD, an assistant investigator at Group Health Research Institute, explained in the media statement. “We hope that if women know what to expect with screening, they’ll feel less anxiety if – or when – they are called back for more testing. Studies show drinking coffee may reduce risk of breast cancer

But the mainstream media, as well as mainstream medicine, often treat breast cancer as something that strikes out of the blue — giving women no choice but to hope they are not one of the “unlucky” ones to get breast cancer. At the same time this subjects women to to mammography so a malignancy can be spotted early, despite the fact the actual radiation exposure associated with mammograms is known to raise the risk of breast cancer in some women (http://www.naturalnews.com/024901.html). But here’s good news. Scientists studying natural compounds in plants are finding many may offer some level of protection against breast cancer. That means women can start taking control of their breast cancer risk by paying attention to what they eat and drink. In detailed research just published in BioMed Central’s open access journal Breast Cancer Research , scientists from Sweden’s prestigious Karolinska Institute present compelling evidence that something in coffee slashes the risk of breast cancer. The new study concludes that drinking coffee specifically reduces the risk of what researchers call anti-estrogen-resistant estrogen-receptor (ER) negative breast cancer, dubbed ER-negative breast cancer for short. The Sweden research team compared lifestyle factors and coffee consumption between women with breast cancer and women the same age that did not have any breast malignancies. It turns out that coffee drinkers had a far lower incidence of breast cancer overall than women who rarely drank coffee. Delving further into the impact of coffee, the scientists looked at several lifestyle factors that affect breast cancer rates, including age at menopause, exercise, weight, education, and a family history of breast cancer. Once they had adjusted their data to account for all of these factors, they found that the protective effect of coffee on breast cancer zeroed on one type of the disease — the ER-negative breast cancer. Although the evidence appears strong that coffee has beneficial effects in protecting women from ER-negative breast cancer, it’s not clear just what the mechanism and compounds involved are. The researchers noted in a statement to the media that the protection from coffee may be due to way the coffee is prepared, or perhaps the type of coffee bean used. An increasing number of people will learn about top nutrients such as resveratrol, astaxanthin and omega-3s. Nutrition education will become increasingly evident in public schools, and many school lunch programs will be reworked to remove more processed dead foods and increase real nutrition. I believe that We the People will ultimately win this battle against GMOs in America. As information about the dangers of GMOs continues to spread, people will increasingly demand that GMO foods be labeled. With enough support (perhaps in 2012, but probably later), a law will be passed requiring that GMO foods be labeled as such, and that will spell the beginning of the end of the GMO era in America. • The FDA will, one way or another, be forced to admit that mercury fillings (“silver fillings”) are dangerous for human health. At the very least, the agency will warn that children and expectant mothers should not be exposed to silver fillings. If this does not happen, you can expect a popular revolt against the FDA and a loud cry for the dissolution of the entire agency. • The next big public health battle will be over water fluoridation , and you can expect NaturalNews, the Fluoride Action Network and many other organizations to turn up the heat on the dangers of water fluoridation. Expect to see Ron Paul and Rand Paul do extraordinarily well in the coming years (as long as they stay on principle), and watch for a groundswell of popular support for the once-again-new idea of sensibly limited government. • Watch for a rise in the Tenth Amendment movement in America as an increasing number of Americans fight back against what they see as a dangerous expansion of the power of the federal government. With the TSA in your pants and the FDA in your greenhouse, there’s no telling what part of your life Big Brother wants to control next. America was founded on the idea of limited government , and I believe we’ll see a powerful, passionate movement that seeks to bring the federal government back down to its Constitutionally-mandated size (which is a fraction of its current size and scope). The Tenth Amendment, by the way, specifically reserves all rights not specifically granted to the federal government to be held by the States or the People. The Constitution, for the record, never granted the federal government the right to run a health care system, nor to give away the power to coin money to a private banking cartel, nor to inspect your backyard food production operation that you use to produce jams and jellies for the local farmers’ market. Specific short-term predictions • Expect a new Big Government war on internet freedom. Mostly due to the Wikileaks releases, governments around the world are going to desperately attempt to police the internet and clamp down on web-based free speech. This will likely result in an online war between the “empire” (the USA and the UN) and the “rebel alliance” (the internet hackers such as ‘anonymous’). • By the end of 2012, I predict significant food supply disruptions in North America, brought about either by radical weather affecting crop yields or perhaps the invasion of disease indirectly caused by the over-use of pesticides or GMOs. The number of people in America struggling to feed themselves and their families will rise along with food prices (see next). This will inevitably result in a huge increase in crime (burglaries, thefts) at precisely the same time that cities are laying off local law enforcement officers due to budgetary restrictions. • Expect to see food prices climb with alarming speed over the next two years. Wheat is already on the rise, and even meat prices will surge up sharply before the end of 2012. While food won’t disappear, it will become significantly more expensive, causing more people to shift to subsidized foods (corn, sugar, etc.) which also happen to be some of the worst foods for your health. GMOs are cheap in the short run… until you get your hospital bill. • Oil prices will also trend sharply upwards over the next two years. We will almost certainly see oil at $150 per barrel and possibly even at $200 for a brief time. This will of course impact food prices, the transportation industry and virtually the entire economy. • By late 2012, the economic downfall of the United States will have accelerated, and the inevitable collapse of the U.S. dollar will by that time have become apparent to virtually everyone. The ability of the U.S. Treasury to auction its debt will drop sharply as ratings institutions either downgrade U.S. debt or publicly threaten to. Long-term predictions • Over the next decade, I predict a disappearing “health middle class” and a great divide between the healthy and the sick. The healthy, you see, are consuming superfoods, getting sunshine on their skin and taking nutritional supplements on a daily basis. The unhealthy are eating processed foods, taking prescription medications and following the advice of their ignorant doctors even if it kills them. There will be fewer people of “average” health in America in the coming years. The masses will gravitate toward disease and sickness while the informed few (such as NaturalNews readers, raw food vegans, superfood fans and so on) will get healthier and more productive. • By 2025, the FDA as we know it today will be ancient history, and a new era of food freedom and health freedom will have swept across the former United States of America. Marijuana will become a key crop for raising revenue for the states (or the equivalent governing entity), the pharmaceutical industry will have severely downsized, and the scientific censorship of the FDA will have been abandoned to a chapter of the dark history of America. Millions of doctors, oncologists and useless government bureaucrats will find themselves out of work or, in the most extreme cases, subjected to court trials for their crimes against humanity. • By 2030, it will become obvious that all those people treated with vaccines, chemotherapy, pharmaceuticals and conventional medical procedures are largely infertile and dying from degenerative disease. Also by this time, those individuals who ate diets largely made of GMOs, processed foods and artificial chemical additives will discover they, too, are infertile and diseased. The dying, diseased people of the western world will look back upon the “age of medical science” with hatred and disbelief, and the vaccines, chemotherapy, mercury fillings, water fluoridation and other poisons that are common in our world today will, by 2030, be written up in the history books as examples of humanity’s incredible capacity for self-deception and faulty thinking, even in the realm of so-called “science.” Health Ranger predictions are already coming true Many of the predictions I made a year ago have already come true, by the way. Doctor urges fast food restaurants to hand out statin drugs like ketchup packets (opinion)

(NaturalNews) It sounds like an April Fool’s joke, but it isn’t: A doctor from Imperial College London whose study was published in the American Journal of Cardiology has proclaimed that people who eat burgers and milkshakes at fast food restaurants should be given free statin drugs (like ketchup packets) to counteract the cholesterol effects of eating burgers. “Fast food outlets could provide statin drugs free of charge,” says Dr. Darrel Francis, lead author of study, who goes on to complain that statin drugs shouldn’t be prescription drugs at all. People should be able to get them as easily as asking for a packet of ketchup: “It makes sense to make risk-reducing supplements available just as easily as the unhealthy condiments that are provided free of charge,” Francis says, calling statins a “supplement” instead of a drug. Yeah, as if it were a nutrient or something. What Francis doesn’t mention is the disastrous side effects of statin drugs: Extreme muscle pain and weakness, kidney failure, the loss of CoQ10 (a vital nutrient for heart health), liver damage, erectile dysfunction, constipation and much more. I know people who say they were almost killed by statin drugs but who thankfully recognized the symptoms and stopped taking these dangerous chemical medications before things got worse. But this doctor from Imperial College London apparently doesn’t believe such side effects are a big deal. Statin drugs are so safe, he says, that fast food restaurants should just hand them out like candy. Dangerous advice from a doctor The very premise of this argument is extremely dangerous: That you can go ahead and keep eating toxic fast food as long as you “protect” yourself by taking dangerous chemical medications. Gee, could you possibly get any worse health advice? It’s no wonder this advice is coming from a conventional M.D. The idea that you can block the harm from fast food by swallowing a patented chemical medication with your meal is so absurd as to be stupid. Really: It’s just a simplistic, low-I.Q. conclusion from a doctor who obviously knows nothing about nutrition. What’s he going to recommend next? Free chemo pills to counteract the cancer-causing effects of bacon and sausage? Here, kids, chow down on a little chemo before you head off to school. It’s good for ya! Maybe the industry will come up with gummy-shaped chemo bears for kids. (Don’t laugh. I’ve made similarly comical suggestions in the past that turned out to be true…) But here’s the best part of Dr. Francis’ absurd logic: He compares taking statin drugs to the safety of wearing a seat belt while driving! “When people engage in risky behaviors like driving or smoking, they’re encouraged to take measures that minimize their risk, like wearing a seatbelt or choosing cigarettes with filters. Taking a statin is a rational way of lowering some of the risks of eating a fatty meal,” he says. Sure it is — if you enjoy kidney disease, liver disease, muscle weakness, CoQ10 depletion and other side effects. If you’re a foolish consumer who thinks you can counteract the dangerous chemicals in fast food by swallowing another dangerous chemical to “counteract” it, then free statin drugs might sound downright brilliant. But in the real world, where the laws of biochemistry don’t cater to the absurd ideas of drug-pushing researchers, fast food is bad for your health… and so is taking chemical medications. If you combine them, you don’t neutralize your health risk — you increase your total health risk by expanding it into all the areas of statin drug side effects. So now, instead of just destroying your heart and pancreas by wolfing down fast food, you’re also threatening your liver and kidneys with a chemical drug. That a doctor would actually recommend giving out free statin drugs to fast food customers is yet more proof that conventional medical training is a total failure and that mainstream doctors continue to remain clueless about real answers to health. The real answer to health, in this case, is to stop eating fast food hamburgers and milkshakes . And stop taking dangerous chemical medications while you’re at it. If you really want a healthy heart, blend up a superfood smoothie for lunch, or eat some heart-healthy fresh fruits and vegetables. What’s next from medical Loonyville? Now, think about this story. Happy Meals with free antidepressants , of course! Buy a Happy Meal and your kid gets some psychiatric drugs included with the toy. Munch away, kiddies! Or how about free diabetes drugs with every 12-pack of Coca-Cola products . Drink up all that liquid sugar, folks, and just be sure to swallow your diabetes pills that are included! Why not have free chemotherapy pills in every pack of hot dogs? That way, little kids can eat their hot dogs and then experience just enough nausea to vomit the processed meat back up. Problem solved! See, this whole idea that you can just throw more chemical medications at consumers and thereby “protect” them from food-induced diseases is pure medical madness. That someone from the world of conventional medicine would even suggest such a thing speaks poorly about the credibility of the medical industry at large. It’s becoming increasingly obvious to even mainstream consumers that following the health advice of conventional doctors is a very bad idea . Hey, why not just sell statin drug sandwiches where the drugs are baked right into the bread? Don’t laugh: It wasn’t too long ago that doctors in America suggested they drip statin drugs into the water supply because the drugs were so safe and effective that everyone needed them! Yeah, just like fluoride, if you can believe that. You know, I think the bottom line here is that too many medical researchers are taking their own drugs. Because one of the very first side effects from taking daily medications is a loss of cognitive function and impaired ability to reason. How to Get Rid of Head Lice Naturally

Infestations are common in school children but this is not an indication of poor hygiene or dirty hair. Lice lay their eggs along the base of the hair shaft, close to the scalp. Conventional cures include the application of strong smelling insecticides or shampoos which can be harmful to health, especially in the case of small children. Go the natural route in preventing and treating head lice infestations. Preventing Head Lice Do not think a problem with lice will not affect you or your family. Inspect your child’s head regularly for lice and nits, paying particular attention to the hairline, neck and areas above the ears. If there is an outbreak at your child’s school, be even more thorough. To repel lice, comb the hair twice a week with a comb dipped in a mug of warm water containing a few drops of tea tree oil. Treating Head Lice Ensure that the affected family members use separate towels and face cloths and wash bedding, pillowcases and brushes in hot water. Use a fine toothed nit comb to remove lice from the hair, working through the hair section at a time. Repeat the treatment regularly and newly hatched lice will gradually be removed. Diligently repeating this process for at least two weeks is one of the most effective ways of removing head lice without the use of insecticidal shampoos. Essential Oils to Treat Lice Infestations To kill lice and soothe an itching scalp, add two drops each of lavender, geranium and eucalyptus oils to a teaspoon of natural, unscented body lotion. Massage into the scalp and leave for 30 minutes to an hour. Run a fine-toothed, nit comb through the hair, then rinse well. Make a final rinse by adding two drops each of eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary and geranium oils and 3 teaspoons of vinegar into half a jug of water. Rinse and leave the hair to dry naturally. Nigella Sativa is said to be an excellent cure for head lice and other skin parasites. One cup of finely ground seeds blended with a cup of apple cider vinegar, filtered and then applied to the hair is said to be an excellent natural cure for head lice. Be sure to visit a qualified homeopath if a child’s scalp becomes inflamed or infected or if the above treatment proves to be ineffective. Choking on Hot Dogs? It’s not the shape, it’s the ingredients

(NaturalNews) The American Academy of Pediatrics is making headlines this week with a bizarre recommendation that hot dogs should be re-shaped to make them less of a choking hazard for children. But there’s no mention of all the cancer-causing chemical ingredients that actually go into the hot dogs. Pediatric physicians are apparently more concerned about the shape than the ingredients. And they apparently have no concern about the truth that hot dogs contain cancer-causing ingredients . Hot dogs contain sodium nitrite, of course — a cancer-causing ingredient that’s been widely linked to pancreatic cancer and colorectal cancer. People who eat hot dogs and other processed meats have a 67% increased risk of pancreatic cancer (http://www.naturalnews.com/007024.html). Processed meats no doubt contribute to a large number of childhood cancers. According to the National Cancer Institute, over 1,500 children die each year in the United States from childhood cancer (http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Sites-Types/childhood). How many children actually die from choking on hot dogs, anyway? I’ll bet you it’s a fraction of the number of children who die from leukemia or brain cancer each year. That the AAP would be so concerned about the shape of hot dogs while remaining silent about the health harm caused by hot dog ingredients isn’t all that surprising, actually: These are physicians who often focus on treating children with yet more chemicals such as ADHD drugs, antibiotics and antidepressants. So what should the new shape be… rectangular? Should hot dogs be made into long rectangle shapes so they resemble pink lumber? It would certainly prevent them from rolling out of the buns, wouldn’t it? Then again, we might have to redesign the buns, too. Square hot dogs, you see, don’t fit right in round buns. So we’d have to recalibrate the entire chain of processed junk food just to prevent children from choking on the dogs. Personally, I think we should engage a little truth in advertising and just mandate that hot dogs be reshaped into fleshy cancer tumors . That way, you really know what you’re eating. If these dogs resembled the diseased animals they’re sometimes made from, choking would no longer be a problem at all because no one would eat them in the first place! Mainstream consumers, you see, have been trained by the medical industry to believe that disease strikes spontaneously, without any real cause. One day you have nothing wrong with you, and then suddenly the next day you’re diagnosed with a breast cancer tumor. Shazam! It happens just like being struck by lightning… (and it’s not your fault, you’re told — there’s nothing you could have done about it…) That’s what they want you to believe, anyway. But the truth is very different: All the most common degenerative diseases — cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, etc. — take many years to grow and expand . A cancer tumor can take 10 years (or even more) before it grows to the size that will show up on a mammogram. That means the tumor has been “under construction” for a decade! If you want to be healthy, stop making disease! How disease is manufactured In reading this, the first question you might ask is, “How do I stop making disease?” To answer that question, though, you need to understand how disease is created in the first place. All disease begins with an imbalance in the mind or the body (it can originate in either place and then spread to the other). Disease can be set off by a nutritional deficiency (not enough vitamin D, for example), or a dietary excess (too much homogenized milk). It can be caused by an emotional state such as anger or stress that then spreads to the tissues and begins to create dis-ease in the physical body. You can choose from all the various recipes for disease — which include enormous quantities of junk foods, pharmaceuticals, personal care products and a barrage of vaccines — or you can choose to pursue the recipe for good health. That recipe is based on sound nutrition, fresh fruits and vegetables, time spent outdoors in nature, real sunlight on your skin, targeted nutritional supplements, regular exercise and the elimination of synthetic chemicals from your body. It’s a simple, commonsense recipe that anyone can choose to follow at any time. The minute you start pursuing the recipe for health , you will begin to see results. And the longer you pursue this recipe, the more your positive results will accelerate. Ask your doctor Remember this the next time your doctor or some other health professional gives you advice.
