As the 9/11 anniversary approaches, does the government still have questions to answer? (Part I)

(NaturalNews) Just about every American who was alive on Sept. 11, 2001 remembers where they were and what they were doing on that fateful day when our nation fell under attack. In the decade since, we have managed to punish most of those who were directly responsible for the worst terrorist attack in our history, on our own soil. Millions of people have asked questions about how the attacks could have happened and what took place shortly after the workday began that Tuesday morning. But perhaps some of the most important questions have yet to be answered, and as we prepare to honor nearly 3,000 souls who were killed mercilessly in those attacks, it’s time to take another look at some of the most important of them . For starters, it’s worthy of notation that the U.S. government’s account of what happened on 9/11 wasn’t convincing enough to elicit support from the chairman, vice chairman and senior legal counsel of the 9/11 commission . Officially, Chairman Thomas H. Kean, and Vice Chairman Lee H. Hamilton thanked President George W. Bush and Congress, along with the American people, “for their support throughout the commission’s work.” In a statement released some 21 months after the commission was formed to examine what happened on 9/11, Kean and Hamilton, in a statement, said they believed they accomplished their mandate, which was to “make a full and complete accounting of the circumstances surrounding the attacks, and the extent of the United States’ preparedness for, and immediate response to, the attacks,” and then make “recommendations for corrective measures that can be taken to prevent acts of terrorism.” Despite this rosy “official” assessment of the commission’s work, both Kean and Hamilton were critical of the way there permitted to do their jobs, complaining during the investigation that the White House wasn’t forthcoming with official documents and other evidence, and saying after the commission closed Aug. 21, 2004 that it was really just “set up to fail.” Their assessment was mirrored by senior counsel John Farmer, Jr., who authored, The Ground Truth , a book about the 9/11 attacks, wrote that the commission “discovered that what had occurred that morning, what government and military officials had told Congress, the media, and the public was almost entirely untrue.” Continuing, he wrote, “At some level of the government, at some point in time there was a decision not to tell the truth about what happened.” He, along with Kean and Hamilton, said that while terrorists were ramming jetliners into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and heroic passengers did not have a clue what was going on. Moreover, Farmer says, the official version of events shines praise on the Defense Department, which is responsible for defending the nation’s airspace, and the Federal Aviation Administration, the agency in charge of actually controlling America’s airspace. FDA draft guidance to cripple natural products sector and health freedom, decimate supplement innovation

(NaturalNews) The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is on a mission to seize control of the dietary supplement industry, and cripple it from being able to freely innovate and market potent, effective health products to consumers. DSHEA is perhaps the single most important piece of legislation that continues to defend Americans’ freedom to innovate, manufacture, sell, and buy dietary supplements — and it is one that millions of Americans worked very hard to get passed back in 1994. The passage of DSHEA not only opened up the door for new supplements to be developed, but it also ushered in a new era of health freedom based on innovation in nutrition rather than just in synthetic drugs. FDA draft guidance will establish tight regulatory noose around necks of supplement manufacturers When DSHEA was passed by Congress, it was understood that the FDA would eventually clarify how supplement manufacturers were to notify the agency about the use of “new dietary ingredients.” The provisions in DSHEA clearly state that a “new dietary ingredient” is one that was not sold in the US as a “dietary ingredient” prior to October 15, 1994, when DSHEA was passed — and many supplements on the market today contain such new dietary ingredients. It is important to note here that this DSHEA requirement was meant to involve a simple notification process, not a convoluted ingredient approval process, which is what the FDA is actually proposing to do. In other words, the implication in DSHEA was not that the FDA would require supplement manufacturers to submit extensive applications for ingredient approval, but simply that manufacturers would notify the FDA that they are using of a new ingredient that is presumed to be safe until proven dangerous, not the other way around as the FDA is proposing . What the FDA is right now trying to do is turn this notification requirement into a formal approval process similar to what the agency requires for new drugs — and anyone who has been following NaturalNews for a while knows how expensive, laborious, and corrupt that whole process has become. If the FDA’s guidance proposal comes into effect, the agency will use it to control supplement manufacturers by arbitrarily restricting the ingredients they are allowed to use, and extorting them for money in order to gain ingredient approval — and none of this, of course, was ever intended by DSHEA! In essence, the FDA is attempting to ruin the original intent of DSHEA’s dietary ingredient notification process by turning it into a control tool to over-regulate the supplement industry, and ultimately control what supplements you are allowed to take. And if the agency gets its way, many of the supplements in use today could become “illegal” overnight, and be subject to intense scrutiny by the FDA before being allowed back on the market, if they are ever even allowed back at all. Pharmaceutical drugs responsible for at least 80 percent of poison-related fatalities, dietary supplements responsible for zero percent The FDA’s ultimate goal to rein in and regulate dietary supplements in the same way that it does pharmaceutical drugs is highly concerning, especially when considering the fact that according to statistics from the US National Poison Data System (NPDS), pharmaceutical drugs are responsible for causing at least 80 percent of all poison-related fatalities. Supplements, on the other hand, are responsible for causing basically zero percent of all deaths in the same category. Yet the FDA continues to arrogantly treat dietary supplements as dangerous toxins, constantly alleging that it needs more power over the supplement industry to preserve “consumer safety.” The truth of the matter is that the FDA already has more than enough power over the supplement industry, but has failed in many cases to enforce what is already on the books. Obamacare ruled unconstitutional by federal appeals court

When the White House says “balanced” what it really means is “compromised” — as in, half way between the Republican position (spend us into purgatory) and the Democratic position (spend us into oblivion). It worked for a while… until all those “other people” (foreign central banks) got sick of buying U.S. debt. So lately, Ben Bernanke, Tim Geithner and other arsonists at the Federal Reserve have simply been counterfeiting new money instead: A whopping $16 trillion of it in just the last couple of years. Medical atrocities routinely committed against chimpanzees in the name of science

(NaturalNews) The question of whether chimpanzees and other primates should be used for biomedical research is an issue that has recently been reinvigorated thanks to 186 chimps at the Alamogordo Primate Facility in New Mexico who are waiting for their verdict of either life in a grassy sanctuary or a life of torture in the name of medical research. For years, these chimps were used for biomedical research, primarily for hepatitis and HIV. Lennie, once a space chimp, has been documented as suffering atrocities, including being infected with HIV and hepatitis as well as enduring four spinal taps, a bone-marrow biopsy and repeated blood draws, to name a few. All of these very stressful experiments, no doubt, contributed to his death, apparently from heart disease, in 2002. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a U.S. government entity, is interested in relocating these chimps from their “sanctuary” on an Air Force base in New Mexico, where they’ve been on a 10-year hiatus from invasive experimentation, to the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio, where they’ll be put back into invasive research. Due to public outcry spearheaded by animal rights activists, such as the Humane Society, Animal Protection of New Mexico and In Defense of Animals, the NIH has commissioned a panel to determine the fate of chimpanzees in experimentation. An analysis – to be completed in seven months – is being conducted by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the medical branch of the independent National Academy of Sciences, “to reassess the scientific need for the continued use of chimpanzees to accelerate biomedical discoveries.” According to Eric Kleiman, the Research Director for In Defense of Animals, the IOM process is illegitimate and the outcome a foregone conclusion because of the pro-experimentation make-up of the panel and the fact that the NIH deliberately omitted the topic of ethics from the panel’s charge. For Kleiman, who’s been fighting against chimpanzee experimentation for seventeen years now, it’s a frustrating scenario. He points to what he calls a “remarkable” editorial in Nature , one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the world. In its June 16 issue, the journal wrote that “[The NIH] may wish to divorce the science from the ethics, but society at large will not accept such a distinction. Nor is it intellectually defensible….” Consequently, Kleiman believes that the IOM report will not be definitive. The same Nature editorial wrote that the panel’s report will provide a “valuable starting point” for the much broader discussion of the use of chimpanzees in experimentation. In fact, many researchers now believe that animal testing isn’t necessary anymore. A Petri dish can hold just as much knowledge as a live animal. For the recently-published McClatchy Newspapers Special Report “Chimps: Life in the Lab,” Arthur Caplan, a University of Pennsylvania ethicist who chaired a government panel in the 1980′s that set guidelines for animal research stated that, “the burden of justifying the research is on the researcher, and it’s very high. For primate research, you had better be able to show me that you’ve got something that’s pretty promising: an HIV vaccine, a cancer drug.” “Chimpanzees have not been a universally satisfactory model for human diseases,” concluded the National Research Council (affiliated with the National Academy of Sciences) in a 1997 report; while Science Director, Jarrod Bailey, of the anti-animal testing New England Anti-Vivisection Society is quoted as saying, “100 vaccines had been tested in nonhuman primates, including chimpanzees, and success in animals didn’t translate to success in humans.” Of course, groups like the NIH stand by their beliefs that these animals are important to their research, however there are myriad factors to consider. So where do we draw the line? “When it comes to animal experiments, in general, we’re one of the most regressive countries in the world,” laments Kleiman as he explains that, “NIH is the largest funder of animal experiments.” America is the only country, besides Gabon, that allows for invasive experiments to be conducted on chimpanzees. As a country that should be leading the way, we are falling radically behind in the arena of ethics and animal rights. Still, America isn’t entirely at fault. Although it is true that most countries have outlawed such experimentation, their companies are still free to travel overseas to utilize American facilities. Such allowances are simply loopholes and should not absolve these countries of their culpability in the perpetuation of this heinous activity. After an hour-long conversation with Kleiman, it was clear that there was a whole lot more to the story than most people are aware of, quite literally enough to write a book about. The labyrinthine issue is a mine-filled mess of fabrications and deceptions. “They’ve [the NIH] violated the law, they’ve lied to Congress,” says Kleiman. “What they’re legally doing to these chimpanzees is appalling. The NIH shouldn’t be allowed within a thousand miles of them.” When asked what he expects to see change over the next ten years, Kleiman does not seem optimistic, even though he believes the NIH’s lack of use of these chimpanzees at the APF over the past ten years is a clear indication the agency’s claims that these chimps are vital for experimentation is false. The reality is “the research goes where the money goes,” and “the NIH still has an ‘animal-model’ mindset.” He explains that much of the research conducted on animals is for useless experiments that aren’t cited by anyone but the researchers themselves. “It’s a fundamentally broken system,” says Kleiman. At some point, when playing God with the creatures we cohabitate with on planet earth, we have to ask ourselves what our obligation is as caretakers, and how long can we keep declaring that the ends justifies the means. TSA failure: 25,000 airport security breaches since 2001, says report

(NaturalNews) If you think the establishment of the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) after 9/11 has really helped to make the skies safer, think again. A new report issued by the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security, Homeland Defense and Foreign Operations, says that since November 2001, there have been more than 25,000 airport security breaches, ranging from minor incidents like baggage accidentally being left behind, to major breaches like travelers bypassing security lines and bringing various weapons onto airplanes. The report explains that there have been more than 14,000 incidents of individuals getting into secure areas, including into the secure side of airports, without going through TSA screening. TSA screeners have also personally failed to properly screen travelers about 6,000 times, while more than 2,600 travelers somehow successfully got through the security line without undergoing the normal screening procedures.
