If you happen to like a lot of people these days, you often feel over-tired, worn out and consumed with stress from the many obligations and activities of one’s day to day life. This is not unheard of by any means, and it is nothing to be embarrassed about. For many people, the fact that [...]

Electric car company uses $529 million in U.S. federal loans to assemble cars in Finland

(NaturalNews) The federal government is having a good time freely dispensing billions of taxpayer dollars to green energy companies, despite the fact that it appears to have no solid game plan for determining which initiatives are viable, and which ones will go the way of Solyndra. And now ABC News reports that the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) $529 million loan to Fisker Automotive, a high-end electric hybrid automobile startup company, has been used to establish a manufacturing plant in Finland rather than in the US. Henrik Fisker claims his company could not find a suitable manufacturing facility in the US to build its cars, and instead had no choice but to contract an overseas facility through the Finnish firm Valmet Automotive. He also claims that none of the US-based loan money is being used to pay workers at the Finnish plant, and that the company is utilizing American designers and engineers to innovate the vehicles. But verifying whether or not the venture is advancing in the way Fisker claims is difficult, as a Government Accountability Office (GAO) audit conducted earlier this year found that DOE is ill-equipped to properly manage the loans it is distributing. And a situation like what occurred with Solyndra, the failed California-based solar energy technology company, could eventually occur with a company like Fisker as well, which will leave American taxpayers to foot the bill (http://www.naturalnews.com/033606_Solyndra_emails.html). “DOE cannot be assured that the projects are on track to deliver the vehicles as agreed,” says the GAO report concerning Fisker. “It also means that US taxpayers do not know whether they are getting what they paid for through the loans.” Fisker is already more than a year behind schedule with releasing its $97,000 luxury hybrid, according to ABC News . And its plan to use federal loan money to mass produce a $57,400 Model S sedan is also questionable, as the company allegedly has no experience in implementing this type of large-scale production capacity, and has yet to even release a simple picture or concept drawing of the supposed vehicle. Fisker did purchase a former General Motors manufacturing facility in Wilmington, Del., where Vice President Joe Biden emphatically proclaimed several years ago would eventually be home to a domestic Fisker manufacturing plant. But to this day, there are still no Fisker vehicles being produced there, and the only progress that has been made so far has been overseas. Raw organic foods have stronger ‘energy field’ than cooked or pasteurized conventional foods

(NaturalNews) Food is food, some might claim, and it does not really matter whether or not it is cooked or raw, conventional or organic. The nutritive value remains the same regardless. Or does it? A recent report from Activist Post explains that, based on analysis using a technique known as Kirlian photography, researchers have discovered that the energy fields surrounding raw, organic produce are stronger and more uniform than the energy fields surrounding cooked, conventional produce. This discovery was made possible by an earlier one stumbled upon by the late Semyon Kirlian, a Russian inventor, back in 1939. Kirlian learned that, when connected to a source of voltage, an object placed in contact with a photovoltaic plate will produce a corresponding image of that object on the plate. And the resulting image will also contain a visual display of the object’s electrical “aura,” of sorts, that both surrounds and emanating from it. The theory behind this energy field, of course, is that the stronger and more vibrant it is, the healthier and more “alive” the object. And based on this theory, it has been observed that the energy field of an apple, for instance, is the strongest right after it has first been picked. The longer it remains off the tree and is allowed to ripen, the weaker its energy field becomes. In the documentary The Beautiful Truth , which was released in 2008, a team of scientists used Kirlian photography to analyze various foods. They found that organic foods emitted a clearly more vibrant and harmonious energy field than conventional foods. Raw foods also fared better in the energy department than cooked and pasteurized foods, the latter of which appeared duller and less uniform than their raw counterparts. You can view a roughly two-minute clip from the film where the Kirlian technique is used here: http://youtu.be/suBjc9rIFNY If this energy field is truly indicative of a food’s “life source,” then it appears as though whole, clean foods eaten as close as possible to the way nature intended are more life-giving than over-processed, pesticide-ridden foods. It also means that simply counting calories and looking at ingredient content are not enough to determine the true nutritional capacity of food. The dark side of energy drinks – risking your health for temporary stimulation

October 6, 2011 by

(NaturalNews) Energy drinks have become a modern day phenomenon, with tens of millions now being consumed daily. What’s not to like about having more energy and alertness, particularly if it comes from beverages which often tout herbal and other “natural” ingredients? As it turns out, there is a very great deal not to like – including unhealthy ingredients and potentially dangerous health consequences. Some of the more common unwelcome side effects of energy drinks include elevated heart rates, hypertension, anxiety, headaches and interrupted sleep patterns. Earlier this year, a report in the medical journal Pediatrics warned against energy drinks and cited potential harms including heart palpitations, seizures, strokes and even sudden death. Late last year, poison control centers started tracking energy drink overdoses and side effects nationwide. 677 cases occurred from October through December. The chart’s list of reported energy drink-related symptoms included seizures, hallucinations, rapid heart rate, chest pain, high blood pressure and irritability. The two most common ingredients found in energy drinks are sugar and caffeine; both of which provide temporary stimulation but can result in actual long term energy loss due to stressing the adrenal glands and causing adrenal fatigue. Just one of a huge number of health risks caused by processed sugar is the risk of diabetes, a disease which has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. Very large amounts of sugar can ultimately overwhelm the pancreas, the organ which generates insulin to offset sugar intake. If the pancreas becomes “worn out” by being overworked from too much sugar, diabetes can begin. Some energy drinks contain up to 7 times as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. While small amounts of caffeine are not generally considered dangerous, too much can over stimulate the central nervous system and can dangerously elevate blood pressure and heart rate. Caffeine is also addictive and withdrawal symptoms include headaches and irritability. Caffeine also causes a loss in valuable B vitamins which are needed for “normal” energy creation. When sugar is not used, dangerous artificial sweeteners are employed. Perhaps the most dangerous is aspartame; though increasingly, the sugar substitute of choice has become sucralose. Sucralose is a chlorinated organic compound, a chemical group which includes several compounds known to be harmful to animals and plants and which has been linked to birth defects and other prenatal conditions. The body does not recognize artificial sweeteners like sucralose as food, but instead essentially processes them as toxins. Other potentially dangerous ingredients commonly found in energy drinks include: *Sodium benzoate. Last year a study conducted by an expert in molecular biology and biotechnology linked the common energy drink preservative sodium benzoate to cell damage and an increase in the production of free radicals. Even more concerning, sodium benzoate in combination with vitamin C causes the potent carcinogen benzene. *Phenylalanine. Though an essential amino acid, phenylalanine is also a neurotoxin and is one of the three main ingredients which make up aspartame. Too much can excite the neurons in the brain to the point of cellular death. *Guarana. Guarana (or guaranine) comes from the seeds of the guarana plant, which contain up to 3 to 4 times the caffeine as coffee beans. *Ephedra. Ephedra has been described as a drug that increases heart rate and blood pressure at low doses and causes strokes, seizures, and possibly even death at high doses. There are far safer options for achieving greater energy than energy drinks, such as super foods powders for example. The very best long term option is an active lifestyle combined with adequate sleep, avoidance of energy robbing toxins and stress and a healthy nutrient-dense diet. Siemens abandons nuclear energy in favor of renewable following Fukushima disaster

(NaturalNews) A major, long-time player in the nuclear technology industry, Germany-based Siemens has announced that it is leaving the nuclear energy business for good. Citing “German society and politics clear position on ending nuclear energy,” Siemens CEO Peter Loscher also referenced the ongoing Fukushima disaster in Japan as another reason why his company is switching to safer, more renewable technologies like wind and solar. “The chapter is closed for us,” Loscher is quoted as saying in Spiegel Online , concerning the company’s withdrawal from the nuclear industry. “We will no longer be involved in managing the building or financing of nuclear parts.” Siemens is a large producer of mechanical parts and other materials used in nuclear and other energy industries. The company has also been involved in the production of all nuclear reactors currently operating in Germany, having even made joint plans with Russia-based nuclear firm Rosatom not too long ago to build 400 more nuclear reactors by 2030. But those plans have now been officially scrapped. While the announcement may initially come as a surprise to some, it actually makes good sense in light of the country’s long-range nuclear plans. Shortly after the 9.0+ mega-earthquake and resultant tsunami struck Japan back in March, German Chancellor Angel Merkel announced that her country would be shutting down all of its nuclear plants by 2022 (http://www.naturalnews.com/031831_Germany_nuclear_energy.html). “Germany’s shift towards renewable energies is the project of the century,” added Loscher, noting that his company will continue to produce some of the same components it always has, many of which have dual uses in both the nuclear and non-nuclear energy industries. But at the same time, it will be expanding operations in anticipation of Germany’s 2020 energy goals, which include deriving 35 percent of its energy production from renewable sources by that time. Meanwhile, the German government is currently facing legal backlash for its implementation of a federal tax on nuclear fuel rods, a move that many allege is unconstitutional. And others are challenging the legality of even shutting down Germany’s nuclear plants in the first place (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/sep/19/germany-faces-backlash-from-closing-nuclear-plants/). Ensure you are not deficient in this critical nutrient vitamin B12

September 17, 2011 by

(NaturalNews) One of the most critical but overlooked vitamins in the world is vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is involved in the metabolism of every cell of the body. It is crucial for processes such as DNA synthesis and energy production. B12 deficiencies are a hidden epidemic in our society. Boost your energy and mental clarity with high quality sources of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is very critical for neurological, cardiovascular, digestive, and immunological function. Together, B12 and folic acid reduce the metabolic end-product homocysteine. This pathway is responsible for the body’s entire sulfur-based detoxification system. With normal amounts of folic acid and B12 the body is able to convert homocysteine into glutathione and SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine). Folic acid and B12 deficiencies cause the body to produce less glutathione and elevated unmetabolized homocysteine. This is a red flag warning sign of elevated inflammation and tissue degeneration. Vitamin B12 deficiencies are associated with chronic diseases. B12 deficiencies lead to high homocysteine which is a strong risk factor in cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Mood disorders such as depression and bipolar are very much associated with B12 deficiencies. Researchers found that a diet deficient in folate, B12, and B6 caused cognitive dysfunction and a significant reduction in the length and density of brain capillaries. Many researchers believe that the standard American tests that measure serum B12 levels are far too low. In America, B12 deficiency is evidenced as a serum level below 200 pg/ml (145 pM). In Japan, a deficiency is found in levels under 550 pg/ml (400pM). Most B12 researchers and advanced functional nutritionists agree with the Japanese model. About 10% of the population appears to have normal serum B12; however, their bioavailable B12 is reduced. The telling sign of this is elevated homocysteine and methylmalonic acid despite normal folic acid, B6, and B12 levels. Vitamin B12 deficiencies are common in people who have used medications for a period of time. The medications most commonly associated with B12 deficiencies include a popular diabetes drug, antacids, anti-ulcers, blood pressure and cholesterol meds, and birth control pills. If you have ever taken any of these medications it is imperative to check your B12 levels and supplement if necessary. One population group that is especially vulnerable to B12 deficiencies are strict vegans. The most bioavailable form of B12 is found in animal products. Many vegans use blue-green algae as a form of B12. The algae forms are called pseudo -B12 because they are active in tests but do not have the same human biological activity. The best sources of B12 are found in organic meat and eggs. Be sure to find humanely raised, grass-fed sources of these meat products. Vitamin B12 is a very large molecule compared to other vitamins and requires an enzyme called intrinsic factor to metabolize effectively. High stress, infections, antacids and other medications deplete intrinsic factor. Without adequate intrinsic factor the body cannot effectively metabolize b12 and deficiencies will occur over time. It is estimated that 60% of Americans over the age of 50 and 90% over the age of 70 do not produce enough intrinsic factor and are currently dealing with some level of b12 deficiency. For many individuals B12 supplementation is a necessity. The large size of the molecule also makes supplementation a challenge. The most effective delivery system is through microscopic droplets of B12 that come in a fine mist that gets sprayed into the mouth. It is good to take 1-2mg a day in this form. This system does not depend on the presence of intrinsic factor in the gut and is much easier, cost-effective and significantly safer than B12 injections. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_B12_deficiency http://www.tacanow.org/family-resources/methyl-b12-a-treatment-for-asd-with-methylation-issues/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_B12

Listening to radio healthier than watching TV

(NaturalNews) Sitting in front of the television for hours on end is not healthy. Listening to the radio is a better alternative. According to new British research, time spent listening to the radio makes people happier and gives them higher energy levels overall compared to television viewing and surfing the Internet. In a survey of 1,000 Britons, a study called, “Media and the Mood of the Nation,” respondents reported a 100 percent lift in spirits and a 300 boost in levels of happiness when listening to radio programs compared to all other media. And while TV and Internet also lifted moods, those activities didn’t come close to radio’s positive mental effects. “People are the happiest and most energetic when listening to radio. It plays an important emotional role in people’s lives,” Mark Barber, planning director at the Radio Advertising Bureau, which commissioned the research, told Britain’s Telegraph newspaper. “People use radio as a lifestyle support system and to make themselves feel better about their lives… Our latest research highlights the immense potential of radio to influence emotions,” he said. Lots of previous research has shown that watching TV can be hazardous to your mental health. For example, a 2009 Princeton University study found that too much television causes aggressive behavior in children, especially children who are exposed to an excessive amount early in life. The study concluded that too much TV contributed to social and behavioral problems later in life. Another study found that children who eat in front of the television tend to take in more calories, which, of course, adds more to their waistlines. In that study, researchers found that kids who ate in front of the TV consumed, on average, 228 calories more than kids who didn’t. And those calories add up over time, as other research has found that childhood obesity is at epidemic levels indicate. Still another study found that excessive television viewing by teens increased their risk of depression. Throw in too much X-box 360 and the risk is even higher. The fact is, getting off the couch and doing something more productive with your time will keep you healthier and happier. Just imagine how much better you would feel walking, jogging, biking or working out while listening to the radio or an iPod. What a concept.

Hexane may be lurking in the soy protein found in popular food bars

(NaturalNews) Protein bars, breakfast bars, really anything in bar form just makes sense in our dine while dashing society. The question is, what is it you’re really eating? Most of these bars claim to offer healthy, wholesome energy, but what you may not have realized is that the process to create “soy protein isolate,” which is often a primary ingredient in protein bars, utilizes a toxic solvent called Hexane. Hexane is an industrial waste by-product of gasoline that, according to the EPA, can cause polyneuropathy in humans. Hexane is primarily used as a solvent to extract edible oils from seed and vegetable crops, such as soybeans, as well as a solvent for glues, varnishes and inks. Hexane is also used as a degreaser in the printing industry and as the liquid in low temperature thermometers. Sounds yummy, doesn’t it? So, if you’re wondering why you rarely see “organic” soy protein, this is one of the reasons. Additionally, soy protein typically comes from genetically modified plants. Even non-genetically modified raw materials may contain small amounts of GMO-parts, claims GMO-Compass.org, because a total separation of conventional and GM soybeans is technically impossible. In an effort to help you make smart “bar” choices, I spent a few quality hours in Whole Foods researching just which bars you may want to avoid and which ones you might want to check out. I was surprised to find that the majority of bars available do not contain soy protein. It would seem the newer brands of bars are becoming more savvy in their ingredient offerings. I was impressed enough to walk away with a few bars of my own. Here’s the lowdown. Bars With Soy Protein: Kashi Go Lean: Chocolate Peanut Butter and Chocolate Caramel contain soy protein. Odwalla: Isolated Soy Protein is the #1 ingredient in their Original Super Protein Bar and their Chocolate Peanut Butter bar. Other flavors available did not contain soy protein. Honey Stinger: Contains soy nuggets made up of soy protein isolate, rice flour, malt and salt. Luna Zone Perfect: Contains soy protein nuggets. Balance Clif bars: All bars available contained soy protein except Clif Kids bars. ThinkThin: Their soy crisps are made from soy protein isolate. Powerbar/Powerbar Pria *NuGO: Contains soy protein but claims to use organic hexane-free soy crisps. Bars Without Soy Protein: Kind: The Blueberry Pecan bar, for example, is full of fruits and nuts, non-gmo glucose, chicory fiber and 5 grams of protein. 18 Rabbits: A granola bar with such fun flavors like Cheeky Cherry Chocolate and Haute Diggity Date. They’re one of the lowest in sugar at 12 grams. Perfect Foods: One of my favorites! Look for it in the refrigerated section. Vega Whole Food Energy Bar: Is made from raw alkaline plant-based superfoods such as hemp protein. Pro Bar Superfood Slam: Is a whole food meal bar with organic acai and wheat grass, 7 grams of protein and lots of fruits like papaya and pineapple. Garden of Life: Their Organic Super Seed bar contains 18 sprouted grains including spelt and offers a probiotic blend. Thunderbird Energetica: Their Cherry Walnut Crunch is made with sweet potato, turmeric and Hawaiian black lava salt. Unique, to be sure! I found them on the bottom shelf, so you may have to search for it. Raw Organic Food Bar: One of quite a few products that are specifying non-GMO ingredients. This one also comes with quinoa. My interest is piqued. Vibrant Health: While their Green Vibrance Original Meal Bar sounds appealing with almond butter, honey, carob, cherries, raisins and sunflower seeds and dark chocolate, nowhere on the label do they describe the “Green Vibrance” ingredient. Although green in the health food industry usually brings to mind positive images, there are a lot of green things I wouldn’t want to stick in my mouth. Greens: Their Peanut Butter bar is full of super foods and exciting ingredients like organic alfalfa grass, Echinacea root extract, Siberian eleuthero root extract and Montana bee pollen but not a lot of protein. Their Daily Mocha Mantra, which contains hemp protein, was highly recommended by Eric, the Whole Foods employee, because it’s delicious and high in Omega 3′s. Larabar: Very clean with few ingredients. My favorites are Banana Bread and Apple Pie. Raw Revolution: Their Chocolate and Coconut offers organic flax seeds, 7 grams of protein from cashews, sunflower seeds and almonds. Although it seems that companies are starting to use better ingredients, it’s always important to read food labels. Just because you buy it at the health food store doesn’t mean it’s healthy.
