Breast cancer breakthrough: vitamin D in combination with sun exposure is key to prevention

Women with the lowest blood levels have the highest breast cancer risk and those dying of metastasized disease are the most vitamin D deficient of all. Scientists have theorized vitamin D has anti-cancer properties that influence cell growth, healthy cell differentiation and programmed cell death (apoptosis). However, when researchers have looked only at levels of dietary vitamin D intake and breast cancer risk, their findings have been sometimes inconsistent. So what is going on here? Does vitamin D definitely have the potential to prevent breast malignancies or not? A large and potentially groundbreaking French study appears to have the answer: the key to breast cancer prevention may well be taking higher amounts of vitamin D through diet and supplements combined with regular, direct sunshine exposure. The new research, headed by Dr. Pierre Engel from INSERM (Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale, which is France’s equivalent to the National Institutes of Health in the U.S.), investigated data combined from a large, decade long study involving 67,721 post-menopausal French women. The analysis came up with clear, startling evidence that while vitamin D plays a role in reducing the risk of breast cancer, the addition of adequate sunshine exposure is the factor that substantially drops the risk even more. The scientists found that women living in the sunniest places in the south of France, such as Provence, had only about half the risk of breast cancer of women residing in less sunny latitudes, such as Paris. Even women who had the lowest vitamin D intake but who got lots of sunshine had a 32 percent lower risk of breast cancer than their counterparts living in less sunny latitudes of France. What’s more, the women who consumed the most dietary vitamin D from foods and supplements and who had regular, generous sun exposure had the most significant protection from developing breast cancer. In their research paper, which was just published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention , the French team concluded that a minimum threshold of vitamin D obtained from both sunshine and diet “..is required to prevent breast cancer and this threshold is particularly difficult to reach in postmenopausal women at northern latitudes where quality of sunlight is too poor for adequate vitamin D production.” They also noted that the minimal intake of vitamin D to reduce the risk of breast cancer is likely to vary with an individual woman’s ability to metabolize or synthesize the vitamin from both diet and sunshine exposure. This is the verbage of a military-style retaliation campaign , and that’s exactly the business of Blackwater. Remember how Stapleton said the US needed to “cause some pain?” That’s Blackwater’s calling card! Although these cables don’t prove any connection between Monsanto and Blackwater, they do lend credence to the idea that such a link is not only possibly, but perhaps even probable. It clearly deserves additional investigation. Regardless of whether the Blackwater / Monsanto link is ever proven, what’s crystal clear from all this is that the global GMO conspiracy is very real and that GMO conspirators plot retaliatory actions against any nation that refuses to allow GMOs into their country. Leaked reports reveal US threatened EU to accept GMOs

(NaturalNews) The European Union (EU) has been largely resistant to adopting genetically-modified organisms (GMO), and rightly so considering their threat to human health and to the environment. But recently-released leaked cables have revealed that Bush Administration-appointed, former U.S. Ambassador to France Craig Roberts Stapleton threatened the EU with retaliation years ago if it did not comply with the interests of U.S. biotechnology giants like Monsanto. Besides being slow to adopt “Frankenfoods”, France and several other European nations had proposed at the very least making biotechnology companies responsible for contamination caused by their GM seeds and pollen, just as any other industry would be responsible for their environmental pollution. But Stapleton and the special interests he represented could not tolerate this, and threatened to publicly release a “retaliation list” of European locations where GMOs were being test planted in order that protestors could destroy them and “cause some pain” for EU officials. When the U.S. government-corporate industrial complex does not get its way, it resorts to vicious manipulation tactics to coerce its enemies into complying with its demands. And with biotechnology and drug companies, they must have it all in order to succeed in their endeavors, squashing any and all competition in the process. When Stapleton responded to France’s proposal to hold biotechnology companies liable for their GM pollution by saying that it would “make any biotech planting impossible in practical terms,” he exposed the GMO scandal for what it truly is. Don’t Touch my Junk – Here’s why I wrote this song (Health Ranger)

(NaturalNews) Last Wednesday night, I just couldn’t sleep. The story of traveler John Tyner just stuck in my head. “Don’t Touch My Junk” seemed to be a powerful statement from a regular guy standing up to Big Brother. It was the linguistic equivalent of that Chinese student standing in the path of a tank in Tiananmen Square in 1989. And the phrase “Don’t Touch My Junk” kept rolling around inside my head. So instead of trying (and failing) to go to sleep, I got up from my bed and started typing lyrics into my laptop computer. And then the music suddenly struck me — I had recently licensed a song by an amazing composer (Dan Gautreau) that seemed to fit perfectly with this idea, so I began to put the lyrics together with the song. Almost instantly, the chorus line of “Don’t Touch My Junk” was formed. Recording the song in just 9 hours The next day, I started recording this song at about 1 pm. Amazingly, I finished it by 10 pm. Yes — this entire song took no more than nine hours to fully record, mix and produce. I could hardly believe it myself, actually, because usually these things take many days or even weeks to nail down. But this one was just unbelievably rapid because I did all the recording myself, on my laptop, using a high-end microphone and audio input device. The song contains over 440 individual recordings of my voice, singing the lead lines, harmonies, rap lines, etc. The only voice in the song that isn’t mine is the scream. All the harmonies are 100% natural. I don’t use automatic harmonizers. I just sing the harmonies myself and bang them out with eight to twelve layers. As I’ve been recording a lot of songs lately, this process is becoming very efficient, and I can nail the harmonies usually with the first take (practice makes perfect, huh?). But I have to admit that after singing 440+ lines in nine hours, my voice was fairly stressed for the day. That’s a stretch for any recording artist. Where the lyrics came from In terms of the lyrics, my goal was to make this song funny, edgy and even slightly graphic (but not gross). I wanted it to tell the truth about what’s going on in the airports these days, but not to turn people off from getting too detailed about the TSA’s molestation of little kids, for example. That’s just too graphic to put into a song. It’s a delicate balance. It’s hard to make a topic this serious sound funny at the same time. After all, we’re talking about our freedoms here. Frankly, this is no laughing matter, but the “don’t touch my junk” line was just begging for a comedy treatment with a serious message, so I went for it. On projects like these, you never really know what the public will think. No doubt a few people will decide to be offended by the lyrics, but imagine how much more offended they must feel by the TSA agents who actually perform these acts! I think singing as a form of public protest is an important expression that will hopefully raise the kind of awareness that can lead to real changes. After all, it is rather ridiculous that we Americans living here in the “Land of the Free” are being molested by our own government agents in the name of “security.” Origins of some of the lines On another topic, you may notice in the song some lines borrowed from the song “My Humps” by the Black Eyed Peas. That’s where the line “This ain’t your lovely lady lump” comes from. I also borrowed from MC Hammer with the “Don’t Touch This” line that just fit perfectly in the song. The “Lordy Lordy I declare…” line is from an old schoolyard rhyme that today’s youth are probably not that familiar with, but anyone over the age of 40 will instantly recognize it. The rhyme really does mention “London” and “France” which just happens to rhyme with “underpants.” This is not some sleight towards France, by the way. It’s just the way the rhyme goes. If anything, France’s airport security procedures make a lot more sense than America’s these days… The Scottish Kilt idea was borrowed from a journalist named Jeffrey Goldberg who writes for The Atlantic (http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2010/11/tsa-opt-out-day-now-with-a-superfantastic-new-twist/66545/). He wrote about this a few days ago as a form of public protest against the TSA’s unreasonable searches. It was a brilliant idea and I wanted to reflect it in the song. I originally recorded it as “Irish Kilt” but then I realized that kilts, even though they were used by the Irish, are more frequently associated with Scots. A “true Scotsman” was a man who wore a kilt with no undergarments. So I went with the Scottish kilt for the song. In all, this song is really a conglomeration of ideas, sentiments and concerns carried in the minds of millions of Americans right now. It merely reflects what they’re thinking — and perhaps what they want to say — with the benefit of being wrapped inside a comedic musical presentation that’s fully protected by Free Speech (the First Amendment, of course). That’s the thing about the Amendments in the Bill of Rights: Each one helps protect the other one. Without the First Amendment, I couldn’t write this song. And frankly, without the Second Amendment, Big Brother wouldn’t bother paying any attention to the People at all. Each of the first 10 Amendments in the Bill of Rights are hugely important to our freedoms. And the entire point of creating the Bill of Rights was to protect the People from government tyranny . In other words, the Bill of Rights was created precisely to protect us from the kind of thing we’re suffering under today with the TSA — an unreasonable, even criminal invasion of our personal space by overzealous government thugs on some sort of runaway power trip. Common painkiller drugs lead to male infertility

Vitamin B6 and methionine slash lung cancer risk by 50 percent

(NaturalNews) Lung cancer, which usually develops in the cells lining air passages, will be diagnosed in about 222,520 Americans this year, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In addition, the NCI says nearly half that many people — about 157,300 — will die from the disease in 2010. Although lung cancer is notoriously difficult to treat successfully, French scientists have discovered several natural substances that offer substantial protection from the malignancy. In a huge study of almost 400,000 participants, those who had higher blood levels of vitamin B6 and the essential amino acid methionine (found in many forms of protein) had the lowest risk of lung cancer — even those who were former or current smokers. For the study, which was just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Paul Brennan, Ph.D., of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon, France, and colleagues documented B vitamins and methionine levels based on serum samples from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort study. In all, they investigated 385,747 research subjects from 10 European countries. By 2006, 899 had been diagnosed with lung cancer; they were compared to 1,770 control participants and all were individually matched by country, sex, date of birth, and date of blood collection. The results of the researchers’ analysis revealed a dramatically lower risk for lung cancer among participants with the highest blood levels of B6 and methionine. In addition, a moderately lower risk for lung cancer in former and current smokers was observed in those with higher serum levels of folate. “Similar and consistent decreases in risk were observed in never, former, and current smokers, indicating that results were not due to confounding (factors that can influence outcomes) by smoking. The magnitude of risk was also constant with increasing length of follow-up, indicating that the associations were not explained by preclinical disease,” the researchers stated in their JAMA article. 50 percent reduction in lung cancer “Our results suggest that above-median serum measures of both B6 and methionine, assessed on average five years prior to disease onset, are associated with a reduction of at least 50 percent on the risk of developing lung cancer. An additional association for serum levels of folate was present, that when combined with B6 and methionine, was associated with a two-thirds lower risk of lung cancer,” the scientists wrote. So how could these natural substances keep lung cancer at bay? The key may be found in previous research which has shown that B vitamin deficiencies likely increase the probability of DNA damage and subsequent gene mutations. “Given their involvement in maintaining DNA integrity and gene expression, these nutrients have a potentially important role in inhibiting cancer development, and offer the possibility of modifying cancer risk through dietary changes,” the authors concluded. They also pointed out that B vitamin deficiencies are known to be high in many western populations. Prescription drug abuse exceeds heroin, cocaine and ecstasy combined

(NaturalNews) Rates of prescription drug abuse worldwide are higher than those for the use of cocaine, ecstasy and heroin, combined, according to a new report by the United Nations’ International Narcotics Control Boards (INCB). “Abuse of such drugs has been spreading over the world in recent years,” said report co-author Hamid Ghodse of St. George’s University in London. “It needs to be tackled urgently.” Ghodse said that prescription drug abuse is a “hidden problem,” and it is difficult for authorities to get comprehensive data on the scale of the abuse. Recent high-profile celebrity deaths from prescription drug abuse, such as that of Michael Jackson, have brought more attention to the issue, however. The INCB report notes that in the United States alone, an estimated 6.2 million people were addicted to prescription drugs in 2008, or roughly 2 percent of the population. Among illegal drugs, only cannabis use exceeds this figure. The report further estimates that between 1 and 3 percent of Canadians abuse prescription opioids alone. Students in a number of European countries, including France, Italy, Lithuania and Poland, are estimated to abuse sedatives and tranquilizers at a rate of 10 to 18 percent. The problem is fueled by the prevalence of poorly regulated online pharmacies, which often sell diverted, fake or stolen drugs without a prescription. The INCB also warned that as governments and the pharmaceutical industry have cracked down on illicit distribution of the sedative Rohypnol (known generically as flunitrazepam and colloquially as “the date rape drug”), less tightly controlled drugs have begun to displace it among sexual predators. In particular, the use of ketamine and gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL) in sexual assaults has risen. “Since in many countries these drugs are easily available, they frequently fall into criminal hands,” Ghodse said. Organized crime has stepped into the business of prescription drugs, using methods from theft to manufacture to secure their products, INCB president Sevil Atasoy said, and continually seeking out new ways to get these products to market. Evidence mounts on links between cell phones and brain tumors

(NaturalNews) A growing body of evidence, dating back to the 1960s, suggests that brain tumors may be only one of the many health problems produced by our new wireless society will produce. Cell-phone technology “could lead to a health crisis similar to those caused by asbestos, smoking, and lead in petrol,” warned the European Union’s environmental watchdog agency in 2007. The most ambitious attempt to catalogue the health risks of cell phones to date is the industry-funded Interphone study, carried out by researchers from 13 different countries (not including the United States). Although the study has been criticized for selecting data in a way designed to play down the risks of cell phone use, it continues to turn up alarming findings nonetheless. Among the findings so far are a 40 percent increase in brain tumor risk among adults who use a cell phone for 10 years (especially on the side of the head where the phone is held); a 300 percent increased risk of acoustic nerve tumors; and an increased risk of tumors of the parotid gland. The risk of a brain tumor increases by 400 percent in people who start using a cell phone before the age of 20. Other studies, mostly out of Europe, have linked mobile phone and personal digital assistant (PDA) use to DNA damage, sperm death, and brain damage including early-onset dementia. These findings regularly make big news in the international press, but are by and large played down in U.S. media. The United States has a long history of hostility toward the claim that the microwave radiation used by microwave ovens, cell phones, cell phone towers and wireless internet (Wi-Fi) can be harmful to human health. U.S. law prohibits challenging the placement of cell phone towers on health grounds, and an industry group (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is highly influential in setting exposure standards. The first research on the risks of microwave radiation was actually uncovered by a U.S. researcher, Allan Frey, in the 1960s. Frey discovered that “nonionizing” electromagnetic radiation — previously thought to be harmless — could still produce biological effects. For example, radar waves can produce “sound” even in the absence of actual sound waves by interfering with the brain’s own electromagnetic signals. Frey found that microwaves could damage the organs of lab animals, even stopping their hearts completely. Yet when Frey published a paper showing that microwave radiation could disrupt the functioning of the blood-brain barrier, the Office of Naval Research ordered him to conceal the work or lose funding. Pentagon-funded scientists claimed they had refuted his work, but refused to share any information on their data or methods. Frey found that while the primary (or “carrier”) wave of microwave radiation can cause health problems, the secondary wave that carries the actual data — whether sound, text, pictures or other information transmitted via cell phones or Wi-Fi connections — is far more dangerous. The more data streams carried, the higher the danger. Modern research supports these early findings, with 75 percent of independently funded studies showing health risks from cell phone radiation (in contrast with only 25 percent of industry funded studies). Researchers have also documented dramatic rises in the rate of numerous health problems immediately following the introduction of widespread Wi-Fi and cell phone networks across Europe. Such concerns have led European governments to consider banning Wi-Fi in government facilities, and to the Austrian Medical Association’s call for a ban on Wi-Fi in schools. The national library of France has already removed all Wi-Fi connections due to health concerns. In certain segments of the U.S. population, awareness is also growing. According to an anonymous investment banker speaking to a GQ reporter, rates of brain tumors among financial executives are shockingly high, a fact more and more people are attributing to constant cell phone use. “I knew four or five people just at my firm who got tumors,” the banker said. “Each time, people ask the question. (NaturalNews) A class of insecticide that is applied to seeds and taken up into plant tissue may be responsible for much of the widespread decline in honeybee populations, increasing numbers of researchers and environmentalists are suggesting. Starting in 2005, beekeepers in the United States first reported large numbers of bees mysteriously disappearing, and since then the problem has spread to different parts of the world. No one cause of the collapse has been identified, although front-running theories include parasites, viruses, stress from long-distance transport of hives for pollination, and pesticides. “We do feel like pesticides are playing a role in pollinator decline,” said researcher Maryann Frazier of Penn State University. “We know that the pesticides are there. We don’t know yet exactly what role they’re playing.” The recent documentary “Nicotine Bees” makes the case that a new class of pesticides, introduced in 2005, may be the primary cause of what has come to be known as Colony Collapse Disorder. The chemicals, known as neonicotinoids, are synthetic form of nicotine that is applied to seeds and taken up by the plant into its tissue as it grows. Insects that eat any part of the plant are then killed. Because neonicotinoids were introduced worldwide at around the same time as the first cases of colony collapse, and because they have been directly linked in some cases to massive bee die offs, they have emerged as a primary suspect in the disorder.
