Fair Trade USA certifier severely dilutes standards to include non-fair trade products

(NaturalNews) Concerned about the horrific working conditions and measly wages that many of the world’s poorest must deal with every single day, many consumers are now opting for “fair trade” products that, while slightly more expensive at times, come from farms and factories that operate ethically and honestly. But one of the prominent fair trade certifiers in the US, Fair Trade USA, has decided to compromise its standards and begin accepting products that are not technically fair trade, at least not by international standards. Much like the certified organic label, the fair trade label has come to be recognized as a symbol of quality, integrity and sustainability. Unlike many conventional products, fair trade products are meant to embody non-exploitative trade, or as Fair Trade USA puts it on its website, a “market-based approach that gives farmers fair prices, workers safe conditions, and entire communities resources for fair, healthy and sustainable lives.” But the group’s new policy changes have many reeling in disgust, according to The New York Times (NYT). Rather than continue to promote small-scale coffee and cocoa farms that treat their workers humanely and pay them fair wages, for instance — fair trade coffee and cocoa represent the vast majority of the fair trade market in the US — Fair Trade USA wants to allow large plantations the opportunity to achieve fair trade status. Under current guidelines, fair trade products certified by Fair Trade USA also must have at least 25 percent fair trade content in order to bear the full “Fair Trade Certified” logo (http://www.fairtradeusa.org/certification/label-usage). But under the new guidelines, products with as little as ten percent fair trade ingredients could bear the same label, which some say will confuse customers and ultimately destroy the integrity and reputation of the fair trade market. “Starbucks, Green Mountain and other coffee companies will be able to become 100 percent fair trade not because they’ve changed their business practices one iota but because Fair Trade USA has changed the rules of the game,” said Dean Cycon, founder of the Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee Company in Orange, Mass., to the NYT. And along the same lines, Rink Dickinson, president of Equal Exchange, an importer of fair trade coffee, chocolate, tea and bananas, said the move is a “betrayal” and that Fair Trade USA has “lost their integrity.” Sources for this article include: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/24/business/as-fair-trade-movement-grows-a-dispute-over-its-direction.html
Pesticides are one of top three ‘worst toxic pollution problems’ on planet, say non-profit groups

(NaturalNews) The Blacksmith Institute (BI), an international non-profit environmental health organization devoted to solving pollution problems around the world, in conjunction with Green Cross Switzerland (GCS), a group that helps clean up pollution, recently co-released a comprehensive report entitled The World’s Worst Toxic Pollution Problems . In it, researchers explain how agricultural pesticides represent the number three worst pollution problem on the planet. The report was compiled based on data collected over a three year period from thousands of toxic “hotspots” around the world, all of which were in low- and middle-income countries. The team that compiled the report primarily analyzed how various pollutants affect local people groups rather than the world at large, which means the negative effects of these pollutants are far worse on a global scale. The team also focused on what it calls the “most relevant and urgent” pollutants in terms of toxicity and negative impact. These included heavy metals, radionuclides, poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), fluorides, asbestos, cyanides, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides. After crunching the numbers, the team found that mercury pollution from gold mining and lead pollution from industrial parks are the top two worst world polluters, affecting 3.5 million and nearly 3 million local people, respectively. But taking the third-place spot was agricultural pesticides, which were found to negatively affect more than 2.2 million local people. The report makes very clear that pesticide pollution was only calculated in terms of “local impact” in poorer ares which, again, is far short of their actual global impact. The World Resources Institute (WRI) has reported that nearly 75 percent of pesticide use occurs in developed countries, and primarily in North America, Western Europe and Japan — but none of these places were included in the BI / GCS assessment (http://www.wri.org/publication/content/8660). If the report had been calculated on a global scale in all areas where pesticides are used, the number of those affected by them in one way or another would likely have calculated in the billions. Not only are farmers who use pesticides and those who live around their farms exposed, but so are those who incur contaminated runoff downstream. Then, there are the millions of people globally that consume pesticide-tainted produce. CDC admits not a single person has died from consuming raw milk products in 11 years

(NaturalNews) The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) refuses to acknowledge that, based on all available statistics, raw milk produced on clean, small-scale farms is actually far safer than pasteurized milk from factory farms. But the agency did admit earlier this year, after being pressed and warned of a potential Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request if it failed to comply, that not a single person has died from raw milk consumption in over a decade. This may come as a shock to some who, because of all the propaganda about the alleged dangers of raw milk, are convinced otherwise, but it is true — one of the two deaths often cited by the CDC as evidence that raw milk is dangerous was actually linked to the consumption of raw queso fresco cheese, which is currently outlawed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). And the other is likely linked to an adulterated raw milk product as well, rather than to raw milk. After repeatedly petitioning the CDC for clarification about its questionable raw milk statistics and getting nowhere, Mark McAfee, owner of Organic Pastures Dairy Company (OPDC) in California, finally threatened to file a FOIA request to get to the truth. Shortly thereafter, he received a response from an unidentified official at the CDC’s information office explaining that the one “raw milk” death that occurred between 1998 and 2008 was actually linked to illegal raw queso fresco cheese. The agency has not yet provided details about the other death, but it is likely that it, too, was linked to some adulterated raw milk product rather than to raw milk itself. If and when the agency finally fesses up to the truth about that case, it will also be inadvertently admitting that it has lied to the public for many years about the nature of raw milk. The CDC’s continual avoidance of talking about the much worse dangers associated with pasteurized milk further illustrates its raw milk bias. In 2006 alone, there were at least 1,300 people who got sick from pasteurized milk just in California — and yet the CDC only talks about the roughly 39 reported illnesses every year in the Golden State that are alleged, but not necessarily proven to be, linked to raw milk.
