Dr. David Pattemore and his colleague David Wilcove, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and public affairs at Princeton University, recently set out to learn more about non-native animals and their role in ecosystem management and restoration. What they found is shocking in that, though destructive en masse, these invasive “pests” actually take on the role of former pollinators that have since become extinct — and in some cases, they actually do the job better. Texas agency allows town to run pipeline through state park to avoid completely running out of water

But one Central Texas town, Groesbeck, located about two hours south of Dallas, looks like it will avoid completely running out of water thanks to an emergency decision by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) to run a three-mile water pipeline through a popular state park. The decision is a first as far as Texas state parks go, since no others in the state have water pipelines running through them. But because Groesbeck was a mere two weeks-or-so away from completely running out of water when deliberations began, state officials determined that running a line through Fort Parker State Park to a nearby rock quarry was a necessary measure to maintain a water supply for the town of approximately 6,500 people. “This was a special circumstance where we definitely wanted to help our neighbors out,” said Rodney Franklin, regional director of TPWD, to CBS Houston concerning the decision. “This drought is affecting a lot of folks.” Under normal circumstances, Groesbeck pulls its water from the nearby Navasota River. But the ongoing drought had caused this crucial water resource to mostly dry up, as well as Forth Parker Lake to the north which had been the town’s backup water source. So in order to save the town, officials had to come up with completely new solution. For every tool you have that’s electronic, have a hand-powered alternative standing by: Hand saws, hand drills and other hand-powered tools are easy to come by. Don’t rely entirely on electronics. Think about low-tech items that reliably work. Duct tape. Scissors. Shovels. Quality cutlery in the kitchen. And if you can, find yourself one of those antique treadle sewing machines powered by your foot! (I’ve been trying to find one of these for months and can’t dig one up…) How are you gonna write things down when the electronics are all melted? You’d be amazed how many people no longer have pencil and paper , especially among the younger generation which has entirely abandoned wristwatches, too. (Their mobile phones tell them the time, you see.) Have you ever tried to MAKE a pencil? You’d be amazed how difficult it is. It’s so much easier to just buy a bunch right now and have them stored away. They’re cheap, and for the moment, UPS trucks still operate just fine and they’ll bring these pencils right to your doorstep in a pretty brown box. Getting back to basics In a way, a world without electronics might actually be a far more “real” world than the one in which we live today. More peaceful… back to nature… a place where local community would mean something once again. But of course there would also be a huge price to pay for that transition in terms of lost lives in the cities where people are so disconnected from the real world that they are utterly unable to survive in it. Today’s teens are so addicted to texting devices that I’m pretty sure some of them would just flat-out drop dead within 24 hours if the cell towers stopped functioning. The good news in all this is that getting back to basics is a wise strategy no matter what threats we may be facing in the near future: Nuclear war, police state tyranny, EMP weapons, natural disasters, Earth changes, and so on. Pesticides are one of top three ‘worst toxic pollution problems’ on planet, say non-profit groups

(NaturalNews) The Blacksmith Institute (BI), an international non-profit environmental health organization devoted to solving pollution problems around the world, in conjunction with Green Cross Switzerland (GCS), a group that helps clean up pollution, recently co-released a comprehensive report entitled The World’s Worst Toxic Pollution Problems . In it, researchers explain how agricultural pesticides represent the number three worst pollution problem on the planet. The report was compiled based on data collected over a three year period from thousands of toxic “hotspots” around the world, all of which were in low- and middle-income countries. The team that compiled the report primarily analyzed how various pollutants affect local people groups rather than the world at large, which means the negative effects of these pollutants are far worse on a global scale. The team also focused on what it calls the “most relevant and urgent” pollutants in terms of toxicity and negative impact. These included heavy metals, radionuclides, poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), fluorides, asbestos, cyanides, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides. After crunching the numbers, the team found that mercury pollution from gold mining and lead pollution from industrial parks are the top two worst world polluters, affecting 3.5 million and nearly 3 million local people, respectively. But taking the third-place spot was agricultural pesticides, which were found to negatively affect more than 2.2 million local people. The report makes very clear that pesticide pollution was only calculated in terms of “local impact” in poorer ares which, again, is far short of their actual global impact. The World Resources Institute (WRI) has reported that nearly 75 percent of pesticide use occurs in developed countries, and primarily in North America, Western Europe and Japan — but none of these places were included in the BI / GCS assessment (http://www.wri.org/publication/content/8660). If the report had been calculated on a global scale in all areas where pesticides are used, the number of those affected by them in one way or another would likely have calculated in the billions. Not only are farmers who use pesticides and those who live around their farms exposed, but so are those who incur contaminated runoff downstream. Freedom alert: "Occupy" protests may turn violent, followed by reactionary decline into martial law

(NaturalNews) The signs of escalation are unmistakable. In Oakland, Portland, St. Louis, New York, Denver and other cities, local authorities have begun a “crackdown” on Occupy protesters. A woman was raped at Occupy Philadelphia (http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/11/woman-raped-at-occupy-philadelphia/), and BayCitizen.org is now reporting: “Labor organizers and community activists — including the husband of Mayor Jean Quan — are engaged in a desperate behind-the-scenes effort to prevent a violent showdown between police and protesters at the Occupy Oakland encampment.” (http://www.baycitizen.org/occupy-movement/story/last-minute-attempt-occupy-violence/) In Oakland, the city issued a cease and desist order for protesters to clear out, and similar declarations are being heard at other cities such as New York. But it’s obvious from the talk and demeanor of the protesters that many aren’t going to leave, no matter what! While this alone might already be a recipe for violence, there’s the far more concerning reality of undercover agent provocateurs who work for the government and who are hired to stir up violence! We’ve seen this over and over again, where government agents use persuasion engineering tactics to try to convince innocent protesters to throw pipe bombs, for example, or hurl rocks at windows and unleash a wave a violence. Slouching towards Martial Law The purpose of all this, of course, is for government to intentionally escalate the violence so it can justify a violent crackdown. This crackdown, in turn, might unleash even more violence as protesters fight back, at which point all the mainstream news media networks focus their cameras on the “bloodied police” (while ignoring the bloodied protesters), all while calling for government to “do something about it!” That’s how we end up living under martial law, of course. All it takes is one sufficiently hyped-up violent act for a city, state or even the federal government to issue a state of emergency followed by martial law. This is what they’ve been pushing for all along — they just need an excuse to enact it! Under martial law, all your rights and freedoms are suspended . The Bill of Rights, in other words, is put on hold, and the government could issue a nationwide ban on sales of gold, guns and ammo (among other things). Anyone caught possessing a simple pocket knife could be thrown in the slammer. Anyone caught trading in “contraband” (silver coins) could be arrested at gunpoint and dragged away to be interrogated. This is what’s coming in Amerika if we’re not careful. Martial law is the ultimate condition of government power, and it can stay in place for years . This is what the government wants — to strip away any remaining rights and powers of the People and concentrate those powers in the hands of the corrupt, fascist state. A call for peace In order for “Occupy” to achieve its aims, it must remain non-violent . That’s why Occupy protesters must resist violence at every turn. They must resist bloodshed and even be willing to be bloodied themselves without striking back. This is the essence of peaceful protest against tyrannical empires. The “success” of such protests would be the national publicizing of government agents beating innocent non-violent protesters who don’t fight back. The emotional power of such imagery would turn the entire nation against the government and would rally millions more to join the cause. But the opposite is also true: If protesters become violent and begin shooting at police or striking back at them, the totally corrupt and morally inept mainstream media will, of course, just focus on acts of violence by the protesters and use that to push a national crackdown agenda. Martial Law may be coming soon In 2008, I publicly predicted riots in the streets would appear in America as the corrupt financial system began to crumble. Even at that time, I urged people to avoid violence and to work toward peace, not violence. Today, we are seeing signs that this situation is escalating. I am concerned that we may soon see eruptions of violence across the nation , fomented in part by government agents themselves. This means all the rest of us should prepare for martial law , because it seems increasingly likely to be arriving soon. How do you prepare for martial law? For starters, you stock up on all the items that will be illegal to buy or sell under martial law. Get squared away with gold and silver, for example. It could suddenly become extremely difficult to acquire, which would also make its value skyrocket in the underground economy. Secondly, make copies of all your important documents and keep them in a safe place (that’s also fireproof). Under martial law, you will be required to “show your papers” at frequent checkpoints, just like under Nazi Germany. And if you lose your documents, it will be a total nightmare to try to get new ones issued if you don’t have copies. Thirdly, speak out about the injustices taking place in America today. Why are the banksters given trillion-dollar bailouts while the People are burdened with billions in student loan debt that they are unable to repay? Why does government money go to the wealthy elite instead of helping the people it’s supposed to serve? Or, better yet, why does the Federal Reserve run the U.S. money supply in the first place? Why is government running every little detail of our lives, and reaching down our pants at the airport, and telling us that we can’t grow gardens in our front yards? If there is any conclusion to come out of these “Occupy” protests, it’s that big government is dangerous government . The only real way to protect our interests and our freedoms is to slash the size and power of government and thereby return power to the People where it belongs.
