Biotech’s dirty tricks exposed in new documentary: ‘Scientists Under Attack’

Pusztai was the world leader in his field, and he had received major government funding to come up with the official method for testing the safety of GM foods. His protocols were supposed to become the required tests before any new GMO entered the European market. Pusztai was an insider, and an advocate of GM foods — that is until he actually ran those tests on supposedly harmless GM potatoes. The high-tech spuds were engineered to produce their own pesticide. “The point of the whole genetic modification experiment was to protect the potato against aphids, which are one of the major pests in Scotland,” he said. His team inserted a gene from the snowdrop plant into the potatoes, which did in fact protect the GM crop from the insects. As part of his safety studies, he fed that insecticide producing GM potato to rats, along with a complete and balanced diet. Another group of rats ate natural potatoes. A third was fed not only the natural potatoes, but they also received a dose of the same insecticide that the GM potato produced. This way, if the insecticide was harmful, he would see the same health problems in both the group that ate the GM potatoes, and those that ate the diet spiked with the insecticide. To his surprise, only those that ate the GM potato had severe problems — in every organ and every system he looked at. Massive health problems linked to GMOs “After the animals were killed and dissected,” Pusztai recalled, “we found out that in comparison with the non-genetically modified potatoes, their internal organs developed differently.” The intestines and stomach lining, for example, increased in size, the liver and kidneys were smaller, and the overall rate of growth was retarded. And the immune system suffered. Pusztai emphasized, “They found in those data 36 , 36! very highly significant differences between the GM-fed animals and the non-GM fed animals.” Since the rats that ate the natural potatoes plus the insecticide did not have these issues, there was one obvious conclusion — the process of genetically engineering the potatoes caused unpredicted side effects, turning a harmless food into a dangerous one. When Pusztai saw the extensive damage that his potatoes caused in the lab animals, he also realized that if biotech companies had done the safety studies, the dangerous potatoes would have easily made it to market. He knew this because a few months earlier, he had reviewed the confidential submissions from the biotech companies which allowed their GM soy and corn onto the market. “They were flimsy,” he said. “They were not scientifically well founded.” They would never detect the changes in GMO-fed animals. Reading the industry studies was a turning point in Pusztai’s life. He realized what he was doing and what the industry scientists were doing was diametrically opposed. He was doing safety studies. Companies like Monsanto, on the other hand, were doing as little as possible to get their foods on the market as quickly as possible. Pusztai also realized that the GM soy and corn already on the market had been produced using the same process that had created his dangerous potato. Thus, the GM crops being consumed in the UK and the US might lead to similar damage in the gut, brain and organs of the entire population. Thus, during his TV interview, Pusztai flatly stated: “If I had the choice, I would certainly not eat [GM foods] until I see at least comparable experimental evidence which we are producing for genetically modified potatoes.” Ambushed After the TV show aired, Pusztai was a hero at his prestigious Rowett Institute, where the director praised his work to the press, calling it world-class research. After two days of high-profile media coverage throughout Europe, however, the director received two phone calls from the UK Prime Minister’s Office. “It’s only when we think there was political pressure coming from the top that the situation changed,” said Pusztai. “And then the director, to save his own skin, decided that the best way to deal with the situation [was] A) to destroy me, B) to make me shut up.” Pusztai was told the next morning that his contract would not be renewed, he was silenced with threats of a lawsuit, his team was disbanded, and the protocols were not to be implemented in GMO safety assessments. And then came the attacks. Coordinated between the Institute, biotech academics, and even the pro-GMO UK government, a campaign to destroy Pusztai’s reputation was launched. They were determined to counter the negative media coverage and protect the reputation of GMOs — even if it meant promoting blatant lies and sacrificing a top scientist’s career. Because Pusztai was gagged, he said, “whatever they did say on TV, radio and wrote in the newspapers, I could not deny it, I could not correct it, I could not say what was the real situation.” “The most hurtful thing of all,” remembers Pusztai’s wife Susan, “was that he wasn’t allowed to talk to his colleagues and his colleagues were not allowed to talk to him. So whenever he entered a room, they went silent within seconds.” After seven excruciating months, a committee at the UK Parliament invited Pusztai to speak. This lifted the gag order, which allowed Pusztai to ultimately publish his research, and be interviewed for this film. Oops — GMOs weren’t supposed to be there Ignacio Chapela, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, had “a long-term relationship with a group of indigenous communities” in Mexico. Although GM corn was not yet legally grown in the country, Chapela decided to equip the Mexicans with a laboratory that could test for its presence, in case GMOs were eventually introduced. To help with the training, his colleague David Quist brought GM corn from the US. For the non-GM control corn, Chapela said, “we thought we should just use the local corn, which, of course, is going to be clean and wonderful. And the surprise came when the negative control started coming out positive. That means we started finding transgenic materials where they were not supposed to be.” Chapela says, “The reason why our findings were so astounding was because it was thought that there was no transgenic corn being planted in Mexico at all. And people wanted it that way. . . . Why? Because Mexico is the center of origin of corn. The Mexican government was worried about maintaining the integrity of the land races.” Apparently GM corn imported as food was unknowingly being grown, and had already started contaminating the source of corn’s biodiversity. According to Chapela the industry “had been telling the world that they really had control over these crops, that if they planted . . . transgenic corn in one field, that transgenic corn would not go anywhere else. So our discovery that we were finding transgenic corn maybe a thousand miles from the nearest legal transgenic corn field was a huge problem for them because it really showed very simply, and with real evidence, that they really did not have control.” Chapela and Quist wrote up the finding, which was accepted for publication by the prominent journal Nature . This made “many people within the industry very nervous and very unhappy,” says Chapella. They “started a discreditation campaign for the paper. They did not want the paper to be published.” Unable to stop Nature , however, a Monsanto PR company — the Bivings Group — deployed plan B. “They created two fictitious characters, two doctors,” recounts Chapela. “And these two doctors went on the internet and started spreading rumors that what we had said was false and that the paper was flawed.” The disinformation campaign went viral. It put huge pressure on Nature , spread the false notion that contamination had not taken place, and resulted in a campaign against Chapela by biotech advocates in his University. “In my case,” says Chapela, “I was pushed out of the university at least three times. Every time I fought back and we managed to keep my job. But it’s been very difficult.” Trashing scientists worldwide The treatment of Pusztai and Chapela illustrates what happens around the world to scientists who discover harm from GM crops. The work of Russian scientist Irina Ermakova, for example, was viciously attacked, and there were repeated attempts to intimidate her: papers were burnt on her desk and samples were stolen from her lab. Peeking through these stories of personal attacks are the very real dangers of GMOs, which compel the audience to question the use of GMOs in their own diets. Consider the impact of Ermakova’s research on young women planning to raise a family. After she fed genetically engineered soy flour to female rats, more than half of their offspring died within three weeks. The film also unravels the claims of biotech benefits on the farm level. A visit to Brazil introduces herbicide-tolerant Roundup Ready soybeans, engineered to make weeding a field easier. Farmers can spray Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide right on the field, and the GMOs survive. But this has led to massive overuse of Roundup, which in turn has led to the emergence of herbicide-tolerant superweeds — no longer controllable with Roundup. A natural reaction to these stories might be to ask why isn’t the government telling us the truth and protecting us. Unfortunately, they are part of the problem. FDA cover-up The FDA scientists who reviewed GMOs in the early 1990s were uniformly concerned about their health impacts, according to attorney Andrew Kimbrell, who runs the D.C.-based Center for Food Safety. He was on the team that sued the FDA in 1998, forcing them to turn over nearly 60,000 pages of secret internal memos. Kimbrell extracts key memos from massive filing cabinets in his office, reading the scientists’ warnings: toxins, nutritional problems, loss of biodiversity, change in water use, etc. “So the scientists asked for these studies,” says Kimbrell. “But the politicians at the FDA and in the administration at that time said no. They suppressed the science. And these questions, these studies, have never been done.” Instead, the US government maintains the illusion that nothing is wrong, and that this science works just as the biotech companies are telling us. This is beautifully illustrated with excerpts of biotech apologist Nina Fedoroff, the former science advisor to the Secretary of State. Her bland assurances about the safety of GMOs crumble with each new revelation in the film. Unprecedented risks; no benefits “No one gets up in the morning saying I want to go buy a genetically engineered food,” says Kimbrell. “They offer no benefits, no more nutrition, no more flavor, no nothing. They only offer risks.” He says the average rational person would ask, “Why would I buy a food that offers me no new benefits but only risks?” Kimbrell, who wrote the book Your Right to Know , says it was “critical for the industry to get these foods out without anyone knowing, because if they knew, they would obviously choose not to buy them.” But as Chapela’s discovery of self-propagating GMO contamination illustrates, the risk of GMOs extends well beyond individual considerations. He warns, “We are manipulating life in a way that we really do not understand, we cannot control, and then we’re letting it go into the environment. So it’s a change that is radical, that is unprecedented, that is beyond anything we can understand, and it is irretrievable. We cannot get it back. Old media refuses to cover Rawesome Foods raid, avoids printing raw milk phrase

(NaturalNews) It is perhaps the biggest story of the year in terms of fundamental food rights, and yet with very few exceptions, old media (traditional newspapers and news outlets) has outright refused to even cover the story. In fact, NaturalNews has learned from an inside source at the NY Times that the newspaper has an editorial prohibition against using the term “raw milk” in print. Instead, NYT uses the term “unpasteurized milk” which implies that somehow the milk is “incomplete” unless it is pasteurized. In its coverage of the issue, NY Times is almost universally in favor of processed (pasteurized) milk and strong government regulation, refusing the recognize the rights of private individuals to own shares of cows, goats or other farm animals and then enjoy the benefits of that private ownership (http://www.naturalnews.com/033255_Rawesome_Foods_license.html). Aside from a small number of exceptions, the last real mention of the term “raw milk” by the New York Times appears to be in 2004: http://www.nytimes.com/keyword/raw-milk Before 2004, the paper used “raw milk” throughout numerous articles going back to the 1980′s. NY Times reprints FDA’s blatant lies about raw milk In its most recent story about the Rawesome Raids, the NYT printed false information spewed by a dishonest FDA spokesperson who claimed that raw milk contains “pathogens” and causes children to “wind up as paraplegics.” (NYtimes.com) NaturalNews challenges both the FDA and the New York Times to produce even a single documented case in the last twenty years of a child becoming a paraplegic from consuming raw milk. This is blatantly false information that’s routinely used by the FDA to spread scare stories about raw milk in much the same way that the agency uses scare stories about colloidal silver, Chinese Medicine herbs or nutritional supplements. NYTimes provides absolutely no evidence to back up this false assertion that raw milk causes children to “wind up as paraplegics.” It simply accepts it as true, without question. That’s the role of the corporate-controlled media, of course: To accept government lies as true and then reprint them as fact. This is how vaccine scare stories get propagated by the CDC, as well. The presstitutes are at it again With very few exceptions, no other old media sources have bothered to cover this story of the government terrorism raids against Rawesome Foods. Remember: The Rawesome Foods raid is a case of government-sponsored terrorism against farmers . It’s hard to imagine a bigger and more important story in a nation that claims to be free, and yet the old media just outright refuses to cover it. Perhaps that’s why the members of the old media are called presstitutes by Gerald Celente, who explains that “they only exist to service the politicians.” They also exist, of course, to service the giant food conglomerates which are adamantly opposed to small, local, wholesome food produced on real farms instead of factory farm operations. So while the old media is happy to bring you stories about the latest dance craze, or some political sex scandal, or even the latest buzz about celebrity chefs, they absolutely refuse to print a story that might cause all the mass slaves in America to wake up and start to question the false authority being wielded to control their lives. The last thing the old media wants is for people to actually be aware of issues that impact their freedom. That would set a dangerous precedent of getting people to talk about freedom in the first place. In what is arguably the biggest food-related story of the year, I find myself the sole reporter in the nation covering this 24/7 and putting out articles, interviews and videos at a rapid pace. And it makes me wonder: Who is canning this story at CNN, MSNBC, Washington Post, USA Today and all the other old media organizations that have provided virtually zero coverage of this stunning news? I’m willing to bet an order has come down from the White House on this one: “Don’t cover the Rawesome Foods raid,” it probably says. And so the presstitutes obey as commanded and distract the public with bread and circuses even while the government is openly engaged in the food industry equivalent of a government book burning . There’s a philosophical question in all this, I suppose: If the government burned a huge pile of books but the press never mentioned it, did the book burning really happen? The presstitutes in America are trying to rewrite reality and pretend that nothing nefarious is going on with the Rawesome Foods raids. But only suckers get their news from the mainstream media these days anyway.

Its Getting Worse in Tokyo

On March 15 Michi Okugawa wrote, “The situation in Tokyo is getting worse. The number of people who are panicking is increasing with more and more people trying to get out of Tokyo or out of the country. The nuclear plant explosion is having a large effect in our daily lives. The biggest problem is transportation. Tokyo is darker now due to power saving. As I am writing this, more people have decided to evacuate from Tokyo. I am living my usual life but the surrounding is in a panic.” The Japanese government today admitted that it is overwhelmed by unfolding events. If millions of Japanese wondering what they need to do to get out of harm’s way are confused, there is good reason for it. The Japanese government as well as the American one and health officials around the world are themselves confused about the potential dangers to the people of the greater metropolitan Tokyo area, which is practically in the shadow of the out-of-control nuclear power station. Imagine how they feel being so close. It’s a nuclear nightmare up there in northern Japan. Is there anyone who really wants to doubt that? Top U.S. officials have testified before congress this week that the situation in Japan has reached catastrophic proportions on par with Chernobyl. Both the Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and Gregory B. Jaczko, the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave dire testimony before the House Energy and Commerce committee. This is not the same story being told in Tokyo, at least not yet. But Japan’s nuclear agency spokesman conceded that a “Chernobyl solution” of burying the reactors in sand and concrete was in the back of the authorities’ minds. A day later it is moving to the very front of their minds. American officials in Japan continue to operate on the assumption that the danger level is higher than described by the Japanese and in this essay we continue to assume the dangers are stratospherically higher than even the American officials are admitting . At this point both the primary and secondary containment vessels at the Fukushima nuclear reactor #4 are breached. To make matters worse, radiation readings taken by the U.S. indicate that the cooling pond is empty, indicating the fuel rods are in a state of complete meltdown with no cooling to counteract the meltdown in progress. These events spell out NUCLEAR NIGHTMARE and there will be many deaths in this bad dream. The U.S. has issued a 50-mile evacuation zone around the plant and even that might be too conservative of a radius as things get further out of hand. This is in contrast to Japanese directives that people within about 12 miles evacuate while those between 12 and 19 miles stay indoors. Yet there are strong indications that fuel rods have begun to melt and release extremely high levels of radiation , suggesting they should really start considering evacuating Tokyo. It is time to get people out and it’s time for us to stop using fluoride in our water and mercury in our vaccines and dental products but that’s the problem with us humans and our cherished institutions — we don’t recognize the real dangers until it’s too late and we come up with all kinds of excuses and rationalizations to do or not do something. The frenetic series of efforts to get water into four of the plant’s six reactors is not working . American officials say they suspect that the Japanese power company has consistently underestimated the risk and moved too slowly to contain the damage. To expect the politicians, nuclear power energy officials and the company owners to communicate in an unbiased/untwisted way about nuclear events is to be a fool. All they see are safety signs in their minds and they cannot let anything get in the way of the future of nuclear power even though it’s proving out to be the stupidest, most insane thing modern man has ever done. We will now learn this lesson the hard way. Does anyone have any doubt about that either? As each hour passes in Japan, the world comes closer to reading news of one of the largest nuclear stations in the world going out of control creating a permanent hot spot on our planet that will result in nightmares for ages to come. It is already happening and we are within a hair’s breadth of incalculable suffering and harm to human civilization. Yet the risks are not being disclosed for fear of panic. The days and weeks ahead are going to give us a shocking wake-up call about who we are and what we have done and allowed to be done to our lives. It is a good time for prayers and a good time for some self-reflection. The United Nations is forecasting a possible radioactive plume coming across the Pacific Ocean and arriving in California today, according to the New York Times . California is going to get dumped on by the jet stream from Japan with the fallout being the first whiffs from the first, most minor explosion at Fukushima. The radioactive fallout will contain uranium, cesium, tritium, strontium, and carbon 14 but not very much radioactive iodine. In our next essay entitled “No Danger, No Concern, No Sanity,” we will look more carefully at what to pay attention to regarding long-range, traveling nuclear fallout. Iodine supplementation always makes perfect medical sense for an iodine-deficient population whether confronted with radioactive iodine or not. Dr. David Brownstein has tested 5,000 of his patients and has conferred with many of his colleagues who all sustain the reality that 95 percent of Americans are iodine deficient. Without sufficient iodine we are sitting ducks to toxicities of many kinds with radioactive iodine being only one. Fluoride in the drinking water is much more toxic to an iodine-deficient thyroid. They will not warn you about that and they will not give sufficient warning to what is happening in Japan and what lies ahead. Soon it will be deadly +plutonium coming through. The fuel rods at all six reactors at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi complex contain plutonium. Only six percent of the fuel rods at the plant’s Unit 3 were a mixture of plutonium-239 and uranium-235 when first put into operation. The fuel in other reactors is only uranium, but even there, plutonium is created during the fission process. This means the fuel in all of the stricken reactors and spent fuel pools contain plutonium. Plutonium is super nasty stuff, especially damaging to lungs and kidneys. Inhaling or ingesting only one radioactive particle of plutonium can cause cancer . There are 3,400 tons of fuel in seven spent fuel pools within the six-reactor plant, including one joint pool storing very old fuel from units 3 and 4. There are 877 tons in five of the reactor cores. That is a lot of radioactive material and Japan is actually a very small place. The media run by the super elites are not going to tell people what is really going on. You think they are telling the truth about what is happening in the Gulf states? You think they are going to warn the kids going down for spring break to stay out of the water? You think they are going to tell everyone to go out and buy both eating and external clay to help draw radioactive particles from the body? No they will not come out with any helpful informative information. You would think they would give a heads up to the population about the usefulness of simple Arm and Hammer baking soda and how useful that can be to citizens worried about or actually suffering with radioactive contamination? Not a chance even though it’s been reported that you can clear soil of uranium with it, with sodium bicarbonate, the same stuff that you can stick in your refrigerator, brush your teeth and wash your hair with and even save a life in the emergency room. The world is already paying a high price for nuclear energy. It is not clean and green and certainly not safe but you will never get them to admit that. They are not telling us that the mixed oxide fuel rods used in the compromised number three reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi complex contain enough plutonium to threaten public health with the possibility of inhalation of airborne plutonium particles. Plutonium is most dangerous when it is inhaled and gets into the lungs. The effect on the human body is to vastly increase the chance of developing fatal cancers. That is why in my protocol I call for use of glutathione sodium bicarbonate nebulization because it treats and helps clear the lung tissues. If one has anything above a zero chance of surviving the inhalation of airborne plutonium it’s going to be this kind of treatment as well as with the use of clay. Well actually increasing one’s chance from zero entails the use of a complete protocol for radiation exposure. The damaged number three reactor was undergoing its first fuel cycle using MOX at Daiichi. If one of those MOX reactors blows, spewing plutonium dust across Japan and elsewhere, it is lights out via cancer for anyone who breathes the stuff. The half-life of various plutonium isotopes ranges from minutes to 80 million years. Plutonium-239 has a half-life of 24,100 years meaning it takes that long to lose half of its radioactive potency — nothing compared to depleted uranium, which counts its time in billions of years. Uranium-235 has a half-life of 700 million years. And cesium, which tends to go airborne easily, has a half-life of 30 years.

Another screening fraud exposed: PSA tests do more harm than good

(NaturalNews) Health experts are becoming increasingly vocal in warning that prostate cancer screening may often do more harm than good. Doctors screen for prostate cancer by measuring levels of the prostate specific antigen (PSA), a marker of prostate inflammation. Because inflammation can be caused by other conditions, however, large numbers of men are regularly referred for unnecessary biopsies only to find that they have no cancer. The real problem, however, lies with the purpose of screening itself. Cancer screening is designed to detect cancers early, so that treatment can begin with the goal of lengthening life. This strategy works well for aggressive cancers with reliable screening tests, such as cervical cancer. But not only is the PSA test notoriously unreliable, but the vast majority of prostate cancers grow so slowly that most men who develop the disease will die of other causes before ever exhibiting any symptoms, let alone a risk of death. Because there is no way to distinguish a normal case of prostate cancer from a rare, aggressive one in the early phases, most men who receive a cancer diagnosis undergo aggressive therapies such as radiation, surgery or hormone treatment. Impotence and incontinence are only two of the common side effects of these treatments. That’s why two major studies concluded in 2009 that PSA screening provides no benefit to men, but is regularly harmful, and why nearly all public health agencies no longer recommend the test. The founder of the test himself, Richard Ablin, has publicly called it “a hugely expensive public health disaster … hardly [more accurate] than a coin toss.” “There is no evidence that screening for prostate cancer results in any public health advantage,” write Gerald E. Markle and Frances B. McCrea in their book What If Medicine Disappeared? The U.S. government actively discourages the test for men over the age of 75, yet one in three still get it yearly. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers Michael Wilkes and Jerome Hoffman, of the University of California-Davis and the University of Southern California respectively, this occurs because men are not properly warned about the test’s risks. “People need to understand better that many screening tests are double-edged swords” that should be used selectively, not indiscriminately, said Howard Brody of the University of Texas. Writing in the San Francisco Gate , Wilkes and Hoffman note that ignoring all recommendations, the medical establishment continues to promote regular PSA testing. They point to a recent UC Davis seminar on “men’s health” that focused exclusively on encouraging PSA screening starting at age 40. Some overtesting may be attributed to the fact that urologists make a large part of their income from PSA tests, Wilkes and Hoffman say. Beyond that, however, U.S. culture at large is one that prefers erring on the side of more medical tests, rather than fewer. Brody notes that people now view public discussions of overtesting as an attempt to take away “something of great value.” Politicians have capitalized on this sentiment with rhetoric about “government getting between you and your doctor.” A sense of how truly pervasive over-screening is comes from a recent study, conducted by researchers from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association , which found that among patients with advanced cancer, significant numbers still underwent screening for other cancers. Two percent still got tested for colon cancer, while 6 percent of women got tested for cervical cancer and 9 percent got mammograms. An astonishing fifteen percent of men received prostate cancer screening. Yet the average patient in the study lived only two years after the initial cancer diagnosis. Ron Paul says enough is enough; blasts TSA for obscene pat-downs and police state tactics

We’re not dealing with it the right way, we’re doing the wrong thing, and groping people at the airport doesn’t solve our problems. What has solved our problems basically has been that they put a good lock on the door and they put a gun inside the cockpit. That’s been the greatest boon to our safety! Safety should be the responsibility of the individual and the private property owner. But right now we assume the government’s always going to take care of us and we are supposed to sacrifice our liberties. I say that is wrong; we are not safer, and we also know there are individuals who are making money off this! Michael Chertoff. I mean here’s a guy who was the head of the TSA selling the equipment! Sen. Harry Reid key player in Big Pharma’s control over Washington

According to the allegations, he failed to report a $700,000 land deal to Congress, and accepted $30,000 in bribe money from Nevada Indian gaming. Again in 2007, Reid made the same top ten list . This time, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times that year, Reid abused his power in Washington to negotiate a lucrative real estate deal for developer Havey Whittemore. The same report explained that Whittemore had contributed “tens of thousands of dollars” to Reid’s campaign, and hired Reid’s son, Leif, to act as the company’s lawyer in order to “negotiate” the deal with federal officials. There are likely other historical scandals involving Reid, but these should give you a taste of the type of activities in which you might typically find him engaged. (And you may want to check out Judicial Watch for yourself to see who else is on these lists; you might be surprised to see that politicians from both sides of the aisle regularly appear there). But the biggest issue I want to bring to your attention is Harry Reid’s open and obvious connections to Big Pharma, particularly in relation to the recent health care bill. This is perhaps the most damning and far-reaching scandal in Reid’s history yet, illustrating just how powerful Big Pharma is when it comes to controlling Washington for its own gain. Big Pharma used politicians like Harry Reid to steer health care reform According to a recent Washington Examiner article , Big Pharma has had its tentacles deeply intertwined in health legislation for years, and the industry has been involved in virtually every aspect of crafting the recent health care “reform” bill. Last summer, Billy Tauzin, then President of the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), visited the White House to work out a deal on the health care bill. Mind you, PhRMA is the largest single-industry lobbying group in the nation. According to reports, he negotiated with government officials to make sure all existing drug industry favors would remain intact in any proposed health care legislation. But this wasn’t all. Tauzin was able to convince Democrat politicians — many of the same ones who promised during the Obama campaign to rid Washington of special interest control — to add to the bill additional drug industry perks including subsidies, mandates, and a complete monopoly on complex drugs that will last 12 years. So much for transparency and reform, huh? When all was said and done, PhRMA got what it wanted and Big Pharma won yet another long-term financial victory in the name of “reform.” So how does Harry Reid play into all this? Well for starters, Reid successfully stopped Byron Dorgan’s drug reimportation amendment from being added to the bill, which would have helped to reduce drug costs for consumers (and cut Big Pharma’s profits). The Dorgan amendment was basically a government price control option that would have reduced drug prices for consumers and limited Big Pharma’s complete monopoly over drugs. Even though it was a far cry from a true free market that would lower drug prices through real competition, the amendment would have cut costs for consumers, employers and states at the expense of Big Pharma’s monopoly. Nevertheless, Big Pharma quickly squashed the amendment through one of their right-hand men, Harry Reid, who coordinated a Democratic filibuster of the bill until PhRMA could convince the politicians who supported the amendment to change their minds. One of the ways PhRMA achieved this was by convincing the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to write a letter to the Senators who were about to vote on the bill. Throughout this entire process, Reid was the primary catalyst for guiding health care reform legislation the way PhRMA wanted it to go, and in the end, he made sure it got passed the way Big Pharma wanted. A far cry from actual reform, the health care bill drastically expanded Big Pharma’s control over health care under the guise of being a “public option”. Follow the money to Sen. Reid’s office Big Pharma rewarded Reid nicely for his services by paying him tens of thousands of dollars. In fact, the money began flowing almost immediately after Tauzin first visited the White House back in July 2009. According to news reports , drug giant Eli Lilly sent Reid a $5,000 check just two days after Tauzin’s first visit to Washington. By the following Monday, Reid received two more $5,000 checks, one from PhRMA and one from Pfizer, the nation’s largest drug company. And by the end of the following week, Merck and Astra-Zeneca sent their checks as well. So in less than two weeks after a visit from a Big Pharma lobbyist, a single politician receives at least $23,000. But that’s just the money Reid received for the initial meeting. After successfully getting the bill passed, Big Pharma sent Reid plenty of “thank you” money for his compliance with their agenda. As of May 30, 2010, Reid’s Big Pharma gifts totaled at least $154,000 , setting him one place behind Big Pharma’s number one man, Senator Richard Burr (R-NC). It’s important to note that Sen. Harry Reid, a Democrat, and Sen. Richard Burr, a Republican, hold the top two positions on Big Pharma’s political donation payroll. Both political parties, you see, are deep in bed with Big Pharma. Reid’s re-election campaign being driven by Big Pharma Naturally, the passage of Obamacare has sent shock waves throughout the nation, including in Harry Reid’s home state of Nevada. Reid’s support for re-election dropped tremendously in his home state following the passage of Obamacare, with approval ratings hovering in the 30 percentile. Fortunately for Reid, part of Big Pharma’s payment for his services includes funding an ad campaign for his re-election this fall . One of the ads they’ve made for Reid includes laud and praise for the many supposed ways that he’s helped Nevada families and improved the condition of the state, but the ad was bought and paid for by, guess who? PhRMA. It’s exactly this type of apparent corruption in Washington that the Obama campaign spoke so heavily against on the campaign trail. But in its actions, the Obama administration wholly supported handing Big Pharma even more monopolistic control over America’s health care system. This type of doublespeak seems sadly typical in Washington, and it comes from both parties. Reid, and countless other Washington politicians from both sides of the aisle, regularly accept money from powerful lobbyists like Big Pharma that control our government and shape our public health care policies. Big Pharma operates a multi-billion dollar monopoly on medicine that it uses to financially influence politicians who write industry laws. And the facts show that this type of corruption exists on both sides of the aisle. Those whose campaigns are the most heavily funded are almost always the same candidates receiving money from the pharmaceutical industry, regardless of their political affiliations. Real candidates like Representative Ron Paul will always be marginalized because they refuse to be political prostitutes for the corporate elite who want to control our nation. They serve based on principle, not based on which industry hands them the most money. Sadly, both the Republican and Democratic party have been largely hijacked by pharmaceutical interests, and until we get the corporations out of politics — and the crooks out of Washington — this situation is unlikely to change.

America today: Medicated drivers, toxic foods and counterfeit money supply

(NaturalNews) There are a great many reasons to love America. For one thing, Freedom of Speech remains largely intact in the USA (although the FDA has struck a serious blow to the principle with its ongoing censorship of free speech about nutritional supplements). We also have a diverse culture of people who are by and large friendly people. This was brought home to me recently when I was traveling through the Gulf Coast region, talking to people on the street about the BP oil spill. Virtually everyone was friendly, and I found I could walk right up to all sorts of people — from the country fisherman in Biloxi Mississippi to the street-drumming entertainers in New Orleans — and they were all happy to chat. America offers a lot to be thankful for, but there are also some serious problems that are eroding the very things that make America great. As much as one-third of all automobile accidents involve medicated drivers, I learned from a police captain in Tucson, Arizona. The aggregate harm caused by medicated drivers is now far worse than the harm caused by drunk drivers. Police rarely test drivers for being under the influence of medication even though many medications cause impaired judgment, lengthened reaction times and a loss of hand-eye coordination. There is currently no national group focused on opposition to medicated drivers, either. This is the big problem on America’s roads that no one is talking about (except NaturalNews and a handful of other forward-thinking bloggers). Remember: Popping pills and driving don’t mix. #2: Counterfeit Money Supply By now, we all know that the Federal Reserve is counterfeiting the U.S. money supply by printing trillions of dollars (creating money out of thin air) to bail out rich Wall Street banksters. If you or I did this, we’d be arrested for counterfeiting. But when the Fed does it, somehow it’s all okay… even though the Fed isn’t even part of the federal government! Ron Paul was right: Audit the Fed! After all, why should the U.S. money supply be monopolized by a private corporation that doesn’t even answer to the People? #3: Zombie Population The U.S. population has abandoned critical thinking skills to such an extent that even those people who manage to think just a little now appear downright brilliant. Rather than a nation of critical thinkers, we have largely become a nation of zombie consumers who eat what they’re told, buy what they’re told, vote how they’re told and even believe what they’re told rather than thinking for themselves. The result is a fundamental shift towards a “nanny state” where people want their government leaders to take control of their lives rather than deciding things on their own. This, of course, will only lead us to socialism… the great refuge of lazy minds. #4: Washington Whores No, I’m not talking about the prostitutes in Washington D.C. who are probably running a more honest business than the metaphorical whores who sit in our nation’s capitol. They are the politicians who take money from corporations to betray the People by favoring the legislative interests of Big Business. It’s happening across the board, too, from Big Pharma and Big Tobacco to agriculture, chemicals, food companies, oil firms and defense contractors. All the biggest industries have managed to tilt our elected representatives in their direction, abandoning the needs of the people they claim to represent. #5: Gunpoint Medicine If you are a parent in America, it is illegal to refuse to participate in the sick-care system of toxic western medicine. When parents try to protect their children from toxic chemotherapy drugs or vaccines, they are threatened with arrest and imprisonment. Child Protective Services steps in and threatens to steal their children away, and court Judges order parents to subject their children to these toxic therapies or flee and become fugitives from the law. It all makes you wonder: How bad does western medicine have to become if it has to force compliance at gunpoint? What kind of system of healing subjects people to the tyranny we’re seeing right now in America’s “sick care” system? The answer is obvious: Western medicine doesn’t work, and as more people walk away from it, the State is increasingly forcing people to subject themselves to its rule as a way to mandate compliance for increased corporate profits. #6: Toxic Food Supply I’ve been writing about the toxic food supply since 2003, when my first book Grocery Warning was introduced. (And many people before me were writing about it for decades.) Now, all of a sudden, the mainstream media has become aware of the issue (which is a good thing) and even CNN is running reports about the toxicity of BPA, the “plastics” chemical. It won’t take too many more years before even mainstream scientists attack chemicals in the food supply in much the same way they once went after Big Tobacco. It doesn’t take much thought to realize that if you want to support a healthy population, there’s no room in the food supply for toxic synthetic chemicals that disrupt hormones, promote cancer and interfere with normal physiological function. The real surprise will come when scientists one day realize that virtually the entire food supply is filled with toxic chemicals like MSG, aspartame, artificial colors, whiteners and flow agents. Mark my words: They will look back on 2010 in utter shock at how clueless our modern civilization was for feeding ourselves such poisons. (Echoes of the Roman Empire’s lead poisoning come to mind…) Beyond the six: Pharmaceutical pollution of the waterways and more… While these six problems certainly present major threats to the future of life in America, there are many other threats that didn’t make it into this particular CounterThink Cartoon. In particular, there’s the pharmaceutical pollution of our waterways caused by drug factories dumping billions of doses of drugs down the drain. This situation is now so bad that the fish near all major U.S. cities are intoxicated with pharmaceutical chemicals. We’ve also got other major problems with the political leadership of this country such as the erosion of personal virtue and the prioritizing of selfish gain over the common good. Virtually every elected representative in Washington now focuses most of their effort on staying in power rather than achieving practical advancements for the people who elected them to office. Without question, America has lost much of what first made it great. But with conscious effort, it can regain its greatness. I believe the American people have the spirit and the resources to halt the downfall of their country. The question remains, however: Will they choose to turn things around? Or will they instead settle for the path of comfortable degradation?
