FDA violates law by refusing to ban antibiotics from use in animal feed

(NaturalNews) Earlier in the year, several concerned groups sued the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for failing to address the issue of antibiotic use in animal feed (http://www.naturalnews.com/032824_antibiotics_animal_feed.html). Though numerous studies have found that adding antibiotics to animal feed undeniably causes antibiotic resistance, including an FDA study from 1977, the agency insists that banning the practice is too difficult. The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), the Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT), and the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) all agree that using penicillin and tetracyclines (antibiotics used to treat humans) in animal feed to bulk animals up and cause them grow faster is an unacceptable threat to public health. But the FDA apparently does not agree, as it claims that implementing any sort of ban will be “too expensive and resource intensive,” according to a FACT press release. The FDA stated in its response to the lawsuit that, rather than forcibly restrict the use of antibiotics, the agency will instead allow drug companies to continue “self-regulating” themselves. In other words, it is just more business as usual at the taxpayer-funded Big Pharma agency that looks out for special interests rather than the interests of the people. “Instead of adhering to its mission to protect consumers, the FDA is waiting for the drug companies to voluntarily do what the agency is legally mandated to do,” said FACT’s Public Health Program Director Steven Roach. “There is absolutely no reason to believe that drug companies will voluntarily reduce sales of antibiotics and act against their own financial self-interest. Without reductions in antibiotics used it is impossible for there to be any public health benefit.” It only makes sense that the agency tasked with protecting public health would be expected to step up to the plate and restrict antibiotic use in animals except in cases of actual illness. But the FDA works for a different boss, and few in the American public seem to care that this rogue traitor continues to pad its pockets at the expense of their health. Not only do antibiotics cause animals to become obese and ill (http://www.naturalnews.com/030938_antibiotics_animals.html), but they also cause serious health problems in those at eat meat produced from such animals. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) even admitted back in 2010 that antibiotic use in livestock is a serious threat to human health (http://www.naturalnews.com/029337_antibiotics_livestock.html). Sweet potato nutrition – six amazing facts you need to know

(NaturalNews) One of the most nutritious foods on the traditional Thanksgiving menu is the sweet potato. These orange-skinned root vegetables offer a host of health benefits (especially when cooked without the unnecessary sugar and marshmallows). If you want to raise health consciousness around the dinner table this holiday season, try throwing some of these six sweet potato facts into the conversation: 1. High nutritional value A 7-ounce (1 cup) serving of sweet potatoes contains 65% of the minimum necessary daily amount of Vitamin C. Sweet potatoes are also high in calcium, folate, potassium and beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant which converts to Vitamin A in the body: one serving of sweet potatoes can provide you with as much as 700% of the US RDA for Vitamin A. The Center for Science in the Public Interest rates sweet potatoes as the number one most nutritious vegetable because they such are so nutritionally rich. 2. Low glycemic index If you are unfamiliar with this term, the glycemic index indicates the impact a food substance has on blood sugar levels. A high glycemic index means blood sugar levels can spike. Diabetes and others who monitor their blood sugar levels seek to avoid foods with a high glycemic index or load. Sweet potatoes have a glycemic load of only 17. (By way of comparison, a white potato has an index of 29.) 3. Accessing sweet potatoes’ nutritional benefits is easy To gain the maximum health benefits from eating sweet potatoes, avoid discarding their skins — much of their healing potential resides in this portion of the tubers. Also, following the common dieters’ fallacy of avoiding all fats reduces your ability to access sweet potatoes’ benefits: beta-carotene absorbs more thoroughly into the body when consumed with a small amount of fat. Recent research seems to indicate that steaming or boiling sweet potatoes rather than roasting them helps preserve their low glycemic index. 4. Good for your skin Their high levels of Vitamin A and beta-carotene means sweet potatoes are a skin superfood. The substances on many pricey skin-care products like retinol and retinoic acid are actually derived from Vitamin A. Plus beta-carotene combats the free radicals which result skin aging. 5. Sweet potatoes are like yoga Their high potassium content means sweet potatoes can alleviate muscle cramps which are often related to potassium deficiency. During times of stress, the body uses more potassium, so eating sweet potatoes can help protect you from the negative health effects of tension. 6. Easy to grow in your garden Starting a vegetable garden is a great way both to reduce your grocery bill now, and to reduce your dependency on grocery stores for the long-term. Sweet potatoes make a good beginner’s garden crop. Although originally native to South America, this type of tuber only requires 100 frost-free days in order to grow, so you do not have to live in the tropics to harvest some of these nutritionally valuable tubers. Sweet potato plants have fewer diseases than other types of potatoes, and they are relatively undemanding plants, requiring little in the way of water or fertilizer. How the medical monopoly hides inconvenient vaccine truths

(NaturalNews) Carl Bernstein, one of the journalists of Watergate fame, once cautioned that what isn’t printed in the news is as harmful as inaccurate reporting. Lately, much of the mainstream media has indulged in malicious omission. The lack of true vaccination reportage is worse now than before, but it goes back to the beginning of vaccinations. Vaccination news history “At present, intelligent people do not have their children vaccinated. The result is not, as the Jennerians claimed, the extermination of the human race by smallpox; on the contrary more people are now killed by vaccination than by smallpox.” George Bernard Shaw (August 9, 1944, Irish Times ) Has any contemporary write up of the famous playwright included this quote? Of course not. That could open up a can of public relation worms for the vaccine industry. Media control is highly valued by Big Pharma and other monopolistic cartels. Since the 1970s, centralized media ownership, CIA intervention, and federally sanctioned pharmaceutical advertising have made owning the media easier for Big Pharma. The first episode of ownership control to exclude vaccination horror stories was accomplished by the JP Morgan/Rockefeller syndicate circa 1900. They purchased Encyclopedia Britannica and had all negative vaccination reportage removed. Prior to that, there were four major health disasters from smallpox vaccinations during the late 1800s, ranging from large leprosy outbreaks to hundreds of deaths. The Rockefellers have been the major impetus for the monolithic monopoly of allopathic medicine and Big Pharma, starting with funding medical schools, the AMA, and replacing herbal remedies with petrochemical based pharmaceuticals. Muzzle and marginalize The most recent outrage of media slander to protect the vaccine industry concerned Dr. Andrew Wakefield. Two UK medical journals and the London Sunday Times were involved with that. All three publications had conflicts of financial interest with vaccine manufacturers. The Wakefield incident was carried out with the successful strategy of attacking the messenger instead of dealing with the science questioned. This influences the general public’s capacity for the comforting illusion of establishing authority and focus on gossip. While under attack, defending oneself just seems to make it worse if the media excludes the essential facts. And that is just where the media excels, excluding factual data. From 1900 to now, several reports have been buried that demonstrated vaccination dangers with little or no vaccine efficacy. (vactruth, source below) If the bearers of uncomfortable truth are MDs or dentists, first muzzle them with medical or dental board harassment and remove their licenses to practice. This puts them off limits as accessible media experts, and makes it easier to marginalize them now that they have been considered unqualified practitioners or quacks. Meanwhile, the truth suffers, and so do millions of vaccinated believers of medical authority. Another recent victim of muzzle and marginalize the messenger without taking up the issue presented, is Canadian medical scientist Andrew Moulden, PhD. Essentially, Moulden’s message is, even without toxic additives, vaccinations are dangerous, period. The intentionally created immune system’s overreaction from vaccinations result in normally imperceptible mini-strokes, which incur greater or lesser degrees of brain damage that accumulate as vaccinations are increased. According to Moulden, some adverse reactions are large and immediate. But long term gradual damage from vaccinations is inevitable unless intense natural remedies or life style changes are undertaken. What totally removed this author’s slight but nagging doubt of Moulden’s authenticity was the fact that he was posted as “Quack of the Day” on a site that had also included doctors Russell Blaylock, Sherry Tenpenny, and Andrew Wakefield. Thanks for removing all doubts, Quackbusters. You included Moulden in this author’s pedestal of praiseworthy MDs who dare speak out from within. CSPI to file lawsuit against General Mills for selling ‘fruit’ snacks that contain no fruit

(NaturalNews) Consumers are increasingly holding junk food manufacturers responsible for the false claims they make about their products, especially when such products are labeled as “natural” or as containing fruit when they really do not. Attorneys from the nutrition advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) are filing a class-action lawsuit on behalf of consumers against food giant General Mills for selling “fruit snacks” that contain little or no fruit, and that are loaded with refined sugars, trans fats, and artificial colors. General Mills “Strawberry Fruit Roll-Ups,” for instance, do not actually contain strawberries. They are, however, loaded with questionable additives like corn syrup, dried corn syrup, refined sugar, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, and various other chemicals and petroleum-based dyes. The only fruit-related ingredient in “Strawberry Fruit Roll-Ups” is a form of pear concentrate that represents only a small fraction of the overall product’s content. Similarly, General Mills “Fruit by the Foot Strawberry” snacks, which bear a label claiming they are “fruit flavored,” are packed with the same refined sugar, corn syrup, artificial food coloring, and partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil as Fruit Roll-Ups — and they also contain no strawberries. Many other “fruit” snacks marketed by General Mills also contain labels that say things like “fruit flavored” and “naturally flavored,” and are typically marketed as if they are high in nutrients, and healthy for children. In truth, though, these products are nothing more than junk food posing as loosely-defined health food. “General Mills is basically dressing up a very cheap candy as if it were fruit and charging a premium for it,” says Steve Gardner, litigation director at CSPI. “General Mills is giving consumers the false impression that these products are somehow more wholesome, and charging more. It’s an elaborate hoax on parents who are trying to do right by their kids.” General Mills makes many phony natural products filled with junk ingredients Earlier in the year, NaturalNews conducted an investigation into General Mills cereals and found the very same thing about many of them. General Mills “Total Blueberry Pomegranate” cereal, for instance, contains neither pomegranates nor blueberries. It does, however, contain many of the same harmful ingredients as Fruit Roll-Ups and “Fruit by the Foot.” This list includes refined sugar, corn syrup, and petroleum-based dyes (http://www.naturalnews.com/031053_General_Mills_Total_cereal.html). More recently, the Cornucopia Institute (CI) issued a shocking report about “natural” cereals in general and found that many of them are no better than conventional varieties made by brands like General Mills. Though marketed as if they are the equivalent of organic, and often priced more expensively than organics, these imposter cereals are typically loaded with genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), pesticides, and other chemicals (http://www.naturalnews.com/033838_breakfast_cereals_GMOs.html). BPA levels in humans far higher than previously thought
October 9, 2011 by

(NaturalNews) New studies reveal that levels of BPA are massively higher in humans than previously assumed , causing major concern for what has been downplayed by the packaging industry as a false alarm. BPA, or Bisphenol-A, leaches into food from plastic packaging and from the linings of canned foods, causing cancerous tumors and developmental disorders, including learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and deformations of sexual organs, especially in newborns. The CDC estimates that over 90% of people in the U.S. are chronically exposed to BPA at over 3000 times the daily level that the FDA reports. Maybe this monstrous difference comes from the fact that the FDA standards ignored more than 100 credible research experiments and studies other than their own . The new FDA regulatory language offers to seek “further public comment and external input on the science surrounding BPA,” but industry lobbyists argue about “safe levels” and do their best to muddy those waters in order to keep the profits margins maximized. Much of the latest research and testing of chemicals in foods is being conducted by the very companies that sell them, or by independent labs hired and well paid to conclude that there is “insufficient evidence of levels harmful to humans.” The FDA and the CDC use the rationale that what kills rats in labs may not have the same effect on humans , but this time, hundreds of tests done on humans reveal otherwise . The BPA label is either on the side or bottom of bottles in black or clear numbers, usually inside of the recycling sign formed by circular arrows. The number 2 means your food is contaminated by aluminum and polyethylene plastic, and the number 7 means there is BPA in your polycarbonate container . To make things worse, if the bottles or cans have been sitting on the shelf at the grocery for months, the toxic levels of BPA are higher, and since there’s no “born-on date,” like beer might have, there’s no telling the age of the container. Also, if the plastic gets heated up, like in a car, more toxins are released into the drink. Plus, canned goods are sterilized at up to 265% Fahrenheit, so the level of BPA released in those foods is horrendous, not to mention the fact that all of the nutrients at that temperature have been depleted from the source. Metal cans have no warning or indicator whatsoever about BPA. The remedy is to simply buy glass only and not have to worry about BPA, but then don’t forget to check for sodium benzoate, BHA, BHT, EDTA, and the other “preservative” criminals. BPA was originally developed in the 1930′s as a synthetic version of the female hormone estrogen. BPA is an endocrine disrupter, meaning it is a chemical that interferes with the hormone system in animals, including humans . Wondering why kids are more hyperactive these days and the doctors suggest prescribing ADHD pharmaceuticals? Bisphenol-A mimics estrogenic activity and enhances mesolimbic dopamine activity, which results in hyperactivity and attention deficits. Still have canned sodas on your grocery list? Ordered up by the USA at 8 billion pounds per year, BPA is one of the highest volume chemicals produced by mankind , having adverse effects in mammals and invertebrates all over the world. Canned goods sell particularly well in times of recession and financial stress. In February of 2009, the United States saw an 11.5% rise in canned food sales alone. The highest concentrations recorded are in chicken soup, infant formula and ravioli . By the way, it’s also in your dental fillings. The EPA has not even evaluated BPA for possible carcinogenic activity, and food packaging executives and lobbyists are still planning to use a pregnant woman in their advertising in order to reassure Americans that BPA is safe for children. Remember, an advertisement’s slogan is often a cover up for the product’s greatest weakness. An unlimited supply of hydrogen energy from wastewater? New research suggests it’s possible
September 25, 2011 by

(NaturalNews) Hydrogen-based energy technology currently lacks the ability to effectively and efficiently produce hydrogen on a large scale apart from the heavy input of fossil fuels which defeats the purpose entirely. But a professor out of Penn State University (PSU) has discovered a novel new way to produce hydrogen using simple wastewater or saltwater — and theoretically, the technology could one day produce an unlimited supply of renewable energy. Published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academies of Science , research by Bruce Logan, a professor of environmental engineering at PSU, and his colleague Younggy Kim reveals that adding a precise amount of a certain “activated” bacteria to either wastewater or saltwater effectively produces hydrogen energy as its byproduct. Upon experimenting with electrical currents, the duo discovered that the hydrogen-producing bacteria advantageously began to consume organic compounds in the water after being activated with a surge of electricity. And if connected to an energy-intensive wastewater treatment plant, which would also serve as the water source, a large-scale, hydrogen-producing bacterial facility could convert large amounts of water into hydrogen without even needing to be externally powered. “You can hitch a wastewater treatment (sic) to a hydrogen production plant without any external energy,” Logan is quoted as saying to Fast Company . “Right now the main barriers are, can we do this on a large scale, and can we do this economically?” Logan believes that his process has incredible potential, especially if considered as an incremental advancement in the larger picture of alternative energy development. While it may not be fully refined and optimized, it stands to open the door to further advancements in viably producing energy without the use of fossil fuels, not to mention turn a theory into a reality. “People are investing large amounts of money into technologies that have large scale impacts on energy production,” added Logan. “But there are ways to make the same kind of change from the summation of smaller advances.” Like many of the other energy developments that have been announced in recent years, only time will tell if Logan’s hydrogen advancement shapes up into an actual product, or if it will simply remain an unfulfilled pipe dream. Group pushes for regulation of toxic chemicals in EU

(NaturalNews) ChemSec is lobbying the European Union to ban more toxic chemicals from plastics and cosmetics. Some toxins from children’s toys and implements have been banned there and in the USA. But since then, further research has demonstrated hormonal disruption from long term low level exposure to other toxins in many other products. Yet little is done about it. About Toxins in Plastic Materials The toxic chemical compounds used in plastics are known as phthalates. Phthalates are now understood as emdocrine disrupters, causing unusual sexual development, infertility, and cancer. There are many phthalate variations used in almost all industrial processes. A billion pounds of phthalates are produced annually. Plastic is the most common item containing phthalates. Different phthalates are used according to the level of plasticity desired. But they’re also used in oils, vinyl items, lacquers, and cosmetics. Up until the year 2000, most toxicological research was focused on levels concerned with immediate and strong toxic results. So in the late 1990s, DEHP, DBP, and BBP phthalates were banned from toys for children under 12 and child care, e.g. teething rings, for children under three. The maximum allowable amount of those three items is 0.1 percent of the material used for toys and child care products. Since then three more, DINP, DIDP, and DnOP, have been placed under scrutiny with a moratorium on their production. Why It’s Difficult to Bring About Change But there are many more damaging phthalates still in many other commonly used products capable of reducing health and fertility. The EPA in the USA and Europe’s ChemSec serve similar functions with very little cooperation from their governments. Sure, bureaucracies are inherently slow. But there are groups that resist recommended changes and have more of an inside track to higher government bodies and officials than either the EPA scientists or ChemSec. These other groups are well funded by the chemical industries and headed by former government agency insiders. Their biased “findings” arrive sometimes earlier but always with more clout to decision makers. They are known as front groups. The front group panels distort actual findings and declare the unsafe safe. One such group, The American Council on Science and Health, was formed by an American chemical industry PR group and headed up by former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. This is a perfect example of a front group with a deceptively benevolent title and prestigious membership. Chemical industry funded front groups staffed with revolving door industry/government cronies have enabled corporations to push their bottom line agenda with little or no consideration of health consequences among consumers. Meet your new Federal Family (and don’t use the word "government" please) (satire)
September 3, 2011 by

(NaturalNews) As the reputation of the U.S. government is now in shambles, the feds are turning to the same bait-and-switch tactics used by the Corn Refiners Association as they tried to rename High Fructose Corn Syrup to the more innocent sounding “corn sugar.” The federal government no longer wants to be called a “government” at all. Instead, you’re supposed to refer to them as your “federal family.” Seriously. This is the word from FEMA, which announced last week, “Under the direction of President Obama and Secretary Janet Napolitano, the entire federal family is leaning forward to support our state, tribal and territorial partners along the East Coast.” Family? Really? Sort of like an organized crime family , perhaps? Let’s take a look at this family, shall we? Note: This article is obviously satire. All photos used herein are presented under Fair Use for the purpose of public commentary and satire. Father Obama First there’s Father Obama. He runs the family’s finances, and that’s why the entire family is irreversibly bankrupt and forever on the verge of being evicted from their home which is about to be repossessed by the bank. Father Obama sounds like he knows what he’s talking about, but he’s actually completely clueless. Every time he mandates that the family do something, the outcome is disastrous. One time he ordered everybody in the family to buy all their own health insurance, threatening to take away their allowance money if they didn’t. Another time, he launched bottle rockets at the neighbor’s house on July 4th, setting their roof on fire and burning their house to the ground. It turned out he was trying to get the local kids hired as part of the house reconstruction team and claimed to be engaged in “creating jobs” for the neighborhood. Big Sis Janet Napolitano Don’t wrestle with your big sis Janet. She’s got the skin of a mutant rhinoceros and the face of a Roman battering ram. She’s the “muscle” of the criminal family, complete with bad breath and everything. When you come home late on a Friday night, she insists on searching your pockets for weed, then interrogating you on where you’ve been and why you think you have the right to travel at all. She’s also big on surveillance, so she runs a series of secret nanny cams throughout your house to gather evidence on you and tattle to your parents. She keeps a secret database of all your violations and threatens to use them against you to get what she wants, which just happens to be personally conducting “enhanced pat-downs” on other women. When she’s not busy spying on her siblings, Big Sis Janet is hanging out behind the local bowling alley, selling the weed she confiscated from her brother to raise money to support her S&M fetish. She wields a baseball bat and carries a set of brass knuckles to remind the locals who’s in charge. Uncle Ben Bernanke Uncle Ben Bernanke is the dodgy white collar criminal of the family who runs an illicit printing press in the basement, cranking out counterfeit hundred dollar bills and hoping he won’t get caught by the U.S. Treasury Department. When he’s not printing counterfeit money, he’s running financial scams on little old ladies by selling them derivates, or purchasing mail order goods with counterfeit money orders and cashier’s checks. Like any con man, he’s clean-cut and sounds intelligent, but behind the scenes, he’s always running “get rich quick” schemes that only end up stealing money from people. Even though his ideas never work, he always thinks he’s smarter than everyone else, and he struts around the house with an attitude of total arrogance, screaming about how he’s going to “save the world!” The rest of the family members just scowl and him and scream in return, “Grow some hair where it counts!” “Crazy” Grandpa Harry Reid Harry Reid (US Senate Majority Leader) is that grumpy old grandpa of the family who still thinks he’s running the household but has long since been labeled “demented” by the rest of the family. His ideas about the world are universally wrong, but he can’t stop blabbing at the family dinner table about how brilliant he is and how the whole family would be better off if everyone would just listen to him. Grandpa Harry also has an integrity problem. He once convinced the family members to all pitch in and hire a neighbor kid to mow the lawn, but it later turned out Grandpa was getting a kickback equal to 25% of the kid’s wages, then using that money to buy vodka. He also went racist on everyone and insisted that the family hire no “negroes” to do the mowing, unless they were “light skinned” and spoke with “no Negro dialect.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Reid#Criticism) “Mommy” Margaret Hamburg Margaret Hamburg (current head of the FDA) is the psychopathic, medication-addicted mother of the household. She’s a total hypochondriac who keeps trying to put all the kids on psychiatric medications, and she hoards pain pills in her own medicine cabinet then gobbles a handful when life just gets to be too much. She starts up an argument any time Father Obama brings home vitamins or herbs, claiming that “vitamins are deadly” and that the family needs to receive annual vaccination shots to avoid colds and the flu. She suffers from migraine headaches herself, though, and every time she experiences one, she runs around the house screaming about how she wants to leave this world “and take the children with me, dammit!” Predictably, the family gets sick every year during the flu season, during which “Mommy” Margaret goes crazy blaming everybody else for “not taking their prescribed antibiotics!” The rest of the family has pretty much decided that Margaret is mentally deranged and they are seriously considering asking a court judge to declare her incompetent. Cousin “Good ol’ boy” Tom Vilsack Cousin Tom is a corn-fed, barbeque-eating country boy from Iowa. He seems okay on the outside, but his prostate is the size of a Fukushima-mutated canteloupe because he’s been dining on genetically engineered corn and sucking down hormone-injected beef products for too many years. As suspected, Cousin Tom is becoming a mutant. One time at Thanksgiving, Father Obama told a joke about the economy that made Cousin Tom laugh so hard, he coughed up his own scrotum. He’s also growing a sixth finger on his right hand and a curious appendage from his tailbone that seems to wag when you laugh at it… which happens a lot when Cousin Tom starts talking about how his “genius” ideas are helping so many people (http://www.cagw.org/newsroom/porker-of-the-month/). On the science front, Tom is currently overseeing a small patch of “experimental lawn grass” in the back yard, using seeds he got from Monsanto. That patch of grass has grown to five times its normal size, and small animals recently began disappearing when they wandered nearby. The family dog has gone missing, too, but Cousin Tom seems excited about the new GMO grass and plans to expand the plot to cover the entire perimeter of the house where it can function as “security grass,” he says, with the added benefit that it will “eat intruders.” Gotta love Monsanto technology, eh? Don’t you love your new Federal Family? Your new “Federal Family” isn’t the only family we all know about, is it? There are other famous families in U.S. history that might also right a bell, such as: The Chicago mob boss crime syndicate family. This was a group of families, actually, who surged into power during the era of Prohibition and made money off the fact that alcohol was illegal. The scheme failed to stop alcohol and only made violent crime war worse, so the federal government decided to end prohibition. At about the same time, it enacted prohibition-style laws that outlawed marijuana, and it then began trafficking all the illegal drugs itself, taking over as the “Federal Family” of drug trafficking. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIA_drug_trafficking) The difference between the mafia crime families and the government “Federal Family” is that at least the mafia knows it’s stealing from you. The federal government, on the other hand, claims YOUR money is automatically THEIRS! That’s why they steal a little bit out of every paycheck you earn and then promise to send you checks for your retirement someday… but behind the scenes, they’ve already spent your retirement money on their own bloated salaries and pet pork projects. The federal family, it turns out, steals from you just like real family … but without the annual picnic and mandatory wedding attendances.
Resveratrol, grape seed extract help prevent skin cancer

(NaturalNews) Researchers from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio have made a fascinating discovery about the synergistic effects of certain fruit and vegetable compounds on preventing skin cancer. Resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant found in grape skins, grape seed extract, D-glucarate, a cellular detoxifier, calcium and ellagic acid all seem to work in harmony together to protect against skin cancer. In one study, published in Cancer Prevention Research , scientists observed that these various natural compounds exhibited a protective effect on the body when administered both orally and topically in mice with skin cancer. Even in low doses, the plant agents exerted maximum therapeutic effects when combined with each other because each compound plays a specific and unique role in the process. When administered individually, however, scientists say the compounds are not particularly effective. “Both the combined agents and the combined treatments work better than single agents or treatments in prevention of skin cancer,” explained Dr. Zbigniew Walaszek, research associate professor of pharmacology at the center. But even on its own, resveratrol has been shown in other studies to be particularly effective in preventing and treating cancer. “In controlled studies, resveratrol has been shown to reduce skin cancer tumors by up to 98 percent, to stop production of leukemia cells,” explains Jon Barron in his book Lessons from The Miracle Doctors: A Step-by-Step Guide to Optimum Health and Relief from Catastrophic Illness . “In addition, it works as a Cox inhibitor, thus halting the spread of cancer throughout the body.” The discovery is groundbreaking because it provides potential alternatives to conventional sunscreens, which often contain toxic ingredients. Sunscreens also block out the vitamin D-producing ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, which ultimately prevents users from gaining any of the sun’s health benefits.
