Report: 45 tons of highly radioactive water leaked from Fukushima

(NaturalNews) The woes of Fukushima are far from over as the plant’s owner, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), announced recently that a purification mechanism has leaked at least 45 tons of highly radioactive water, some of which ended up flowing directly into the ocean. TEPCO officials are reportedly in the process of investigating the situation to determine the extent of the damage caused. Throughout the past year, government authorities have been working with TEPCO to bring the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility into a complete, cold shutdown by the end of the year. This means that instead of exceeding its boiling point and reheating nuclear fuel as has been the case since the devastating March 11 disaster, nuclear cooling water is effectively maintained below its boiling point in order to prevent any further leakage and damage (http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/02/us-japan-nuclear-shutdown-idUSTRE7B104520111202). But according to information posted on TEPCO’s website, a decontamination device that had been purifying radioactive cooling water sprung a leak, which sent at least 45 tons of highly radioactive water outside the containment facility. Cracked concrete also allowed some of that water to leak into a gutter that drains directly into nearby ocean waters (http://www.tepco.co.jp/en/press/corp-com/release/index-e.html). Samples taken of the water surrounding the purification device revealed shockingly high levels of radiation, with reports indicating 16,000 becquerels per liter (Bq/l) of cesium-134 and 29,000 Bq/l of cesium-137. This amount of radiation is 270 times and 322 times higher, respectively, than the government’s maximum safety thresholds, according to the Citizens’ Nuclear Information Center in Tokyo. A BusinessWeek report explains that the water also contained 1.8 millisieverts per hour of gamma radiation and 110 millisieverts of beta radiation, both of which are damaging forms of ionizing radiation emitted from nuclear waste that can cause cell damage, leukemia, cancer and various other severe health problems. “The source of the beta radiation in the water is likely to include strontium 90, which if absorbed in the body through eating tainted seaweed or fish, accumulates in bone and can cause cancer,” said Tetsuo Ito, head of Kinki University’s Atomic Energy Research Institute, concerning the situation. Data gathered found that strontium levels in the water are has high as one million times the government’s maximum safety threshold. Tokyo to become dumping ground for radioactive rubble from Fukushima disaster

October 22, 2011 by

(NaturalNews) Authorities from Fukushima and other disaster-stricken areas in Japan say they do not have the capacity to process and dispose of all the radioactive rubble left over from the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck back in March. A large portion of that waste is going to be transferred to Tokyo, according to a recent report by The Mainichi Daily News , a move that some are concerned may result in additional environmental and human harm. The massive amount of wrecked vehicles, destroyed homes and structures that were generated in eastern Japan after the 9.0+ earthquake and tsunami is simply too much for local processing facilities to handle. Reports indicate that some coastal areas generated as much as 4.35 million metric tons of waste each from the disaster, and local facilities are running far short of intended capacity in meeting the central government’s processing and disposal deadline. After discussing the issue with various local authorities, officials in Tokyo have agreed to accept roughly 500,000 metric tons of this waste at its local facility, which it plans to gradually dispose of over a two-and-a-half year period. About 1,000 tons of it are already set to be transported by freight train to processing facilities near Tokyo, where it will either be burned or buried depending on its contamination level. But how radioactive is this waste, truly, and is it safe to begin transporting large amounts of it to areas located in very close proximity to Japan’s largest population center? Many are now asking this question as the government moves forward with its plans, especially since ash left over from burning contaminated rubble has in some cases exceeded 100,000 becquerels per kilogram (Bq/kg) (http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/news/20110926p2a00m0na005000c.html). Tokyo authorities say they will continually monitor the imported waste to make sure it does not exceed the 8,000 Bq/kg maximum limit set by the national government. In a recent sample taken, authorities detected only 133 Bq/kg of radioactive cesium in ash left over from rubble incineration at one location, which is well below the maximum limit. The total cost of disposing of radioactive rubble created by the disaster is expected to top one trillion yen, according to Japan’s Environment Ministry. And this does not include the costs associated with maintaining temporary storage facilities or testing the waste’s radiation levels, which could add several trillion more yen to that total (http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/news/20110930p2a00m0na010000c.html). Hundreds of beef cattle contaminated by Fukushima radiation have been shipped all over Japan, inspection finds

(NaturalNews) The Fukushima Prefecture, a roughly 5,300 square mile region in Japan where the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility is located, recently conducted an area-wide inspection of local farms after discovering levels of radioactive cesium three-to-six times higher than maximum safety thresholds in some beef cattle. To their surprise, they also found that 14 different farms throughout the region had shipped 554 heads of cattle across Japan that had eaten highly-radioactive rice straw. According to reports, the rice straw eaten by the cattle contained up to 500 times more radioactive cesium than the legal limit. And these cattle had been shipped to ten different Japanese prefectures, including Tokyo and Hyogo, which represent two of the most highly populated regions in the nation. Many farmers allegedly did not get the memo that continuing to feed cattle with straw, grass, and other feed exposed to open air was dangerous, and that it had been discouraged by the Japanese government. “It was announced soon after the disaster when there was neither electricity nor gasoline and roads were disrupted,” said Jiro Ohsaki, an official from the Fukushima prefecture government, concerning the apparent misunderstanding among farmers in the area concerning radioactive feed. “[S]ome farmers did not understand that the category of grass and other feed includes rice straw.” The Fukushima prefecture plans to inspect all 4,000 of Fukushima’s cattle farms by August 3. The central government in Japan also plans to implement restrictions on beef cattle shipments following the disturbing discovery. Back in April, NaturalNews reported that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had found radiation in US milk supplies that exceeded EPA maximums by as much as 2000 percent (http://www.naturalnews.com/032048_radiation_milk.html). And various other reports indicated that radiation had also been found in rainwater, leafy greens, tea, and seafood in various parts of the world (http://www.naturalnews.com/Fukushima.html). Though the mainstream media seems to have all but forgotten about the Fukushima disaster and its ongoing consequences, radioactive fallout continues to be a problem throughout Japan, and likely throughout other parts of the world — including the US — as well. TEPCO: Stopping melt-through fuel from contaminating groundwater will cost too much, hurt company stock price

(NaturalNews) The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which owns the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility struck by the massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, has made it abundantly clear that protecting people and the environment from the radioactive fallout of its three massive reactor “melt-throughs” is not a priority (http://www.naturalnews.com/032657_Fukushima_meltdown.html). According to a recent report in The Mainichi Daily News , TEPCO officials claim that installing proper containment vessels to prevent melted fuel from seeping into groundwater will cost too much, and hurt the company’s stock value — and thus it is fighting against calls by the Japanese government to install a concrete containment barrier below the damaged reactors. After all that has occurred since that fateful March day, including the revelation that TEPCO has been basically lying about the true, dire condition of the Fukushima plant for months, the company has the audacity to openly put profits before public safety by denying the only logical propositions being made to contain deadly radiation from contaminating the environment even further. When reporters questioned the company as to why it had not already begun construction of such underground barriers, TEPCO officials actually responded by claiming that “[u]nderground water flows at a speed of about five to ten centimeters a day, so we have more than a year before it reaches shores.” In other words, TEPCO believes there is no need to really do anything because radioactive hot particles will move slowly, and may take years to reach the ocean. Such blatant disregard for human life is astounding in light of the ongoing fallout and devastation coming from Fukushima, the extent of which could take months or years to fully materialize. And if TEPCO ultimately rejects pleas to build proper containment fortifications at Fukushima because it costs too much, the company will be willfully guilty of causing untold destruction and death because of its greed. Fukushima: Strontium levels up to 240 times over legal limit near plant, uninhabitable land area now the size of 17 Manhattans

(NaturalNews) Representing the first time the substance has been detected at the crippled plant, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) reported on Sunday that seawater and groundwater samples taken near the ravaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility in Japan have tested positive for radioactive strontium. And according to a recent report in The Japan Times , levels of strontium detected were up to 240 times over the legal limit, indicating a serious environmental and health threat. Radioactive strontium, which is known to accumulate in bones and eventually lead to diseases like cancer and leukemia, is one of at least three “hot particles” being continually released by the damaged plant, according to experts. The others include radioactive cesium and plutonium, both of which are implicated in causing birth defects, cancer, and death. “We are discovering hot particles everywhere in Japan, even in Tokyo,” said Arnold Gundersen, a former nuclear industry senior vice president with 39 years of nuclear engineering experience, to Al Jazeera . “Scientists are finding these everywhere. Over the last 90 days these hot particles have continued to fall and are being deposited in high concentrations. A lot of people are picking these up in car engine air filters.” TEPCO has allegedly installed a new water decontamination system that it claims will eventually help filter dangerous radioactive isotopes from polluted water, and thus limit environmental and human exposure to the poisons. But that system has already run into several problems as flow rates have been lower than intended. “Fukushima has three nuclear reactors exposed and four fuel cores exposed,” added Gundersen. “You probably have the equivalent of 20 nuclear reactor cores because of the fuel cores, and they are all in desperate need of being cooled, and there is no means to cool them effectively.” Al Jazeera also reports that a nuclear waste advisor to the Japanese government recently explained that roughly 966 square kilometers (km), or 600 square miles, around Fukushima are now uninhabitable due to the unfolding disaster. This massive dead zone area is the equivalent size of 17 Manhattans placed next to each other. Japan not hit by 9.0 quake? False flag nuclear weaponry actually destroyed Fukushima, claims report

(NaturalNews) What if the alleged 9.0+ magnitude mega earthquake that was said to have hit off the coast of Japan back on March 11 never actually happened, and the resultant tsunami that destroyed the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was actually a deliberate, false flag attack using nuclear weapons? Freelance journalist Jim Stone offers compelling evidence that the official story we have all been told concerning the disaster is a phony coverup for a concerted attack against Japan, possibly for offering to enrich uranium for Iran. An actual 9.0+ mega-quake would have leveled the whole country of Japan Consider first the massive impact of an actual 9.0 magnitude earthquake, which would have been about 100 times more powerful than the 6.8 magnitude Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995 that destroyed much of the city of Kobe, located about 12.5 miles from the epicenter, and that killed more than 6,400 people. If the March 11 earthquake in Japan was actually a 9.0, it would have devastated everything within a 1,000-mile radius of the epicenter — and yet the city of Sendai, for example, which is only about 48 miles from the epicenter, suffered virtually no structural damage whatsoever. Truth be told, the only areas that suffered any significant damage at all were areas hit by the tsunami, which included the Fukushima nuclear plant. Besides the immense damage that occurred at the tsunami-hit nuclear plant, there was virtually no seismic damage in any other towns or cities near the epicenter that were not hit by the tsunami, which suggests that the earthquake could not have been anywhere close to a 9.0. According to Stone’s review, the size of the earthquake that hit off Japan’s coast actually registered at only about a 6.67 magnitude, according to some readings, while the tsunami that ensued was the equivalent of what would have occurred during an actual 9.0. Cities and towns hit by tsunami appeared strangely unaware that it was even coming Another factor to consider is that the towns and cities hit by the tsunami appeared to be largely unaware that it was even coming until moments before it arrived. If a 9.0 earthquake had actually hit as claimed, these areas would have not only experienced monumental destruction beforehand, but people living in them would have already been evacuating the area between when the earthquake supposedly hit, and roughly 40 minutes later when the tsunami actually arrived. Various video clips and photos in towns and cities about to be hit by the approaching tsunami reveal that business was largely taking place a usual just minutes before it hit. People are shown walking around, buildings are intact, and little appears to be out of place, despite the fact that a mega-quake has supposedly just occurred. Take a look for yourself at Stone’s information, as well as photos and videos captured, and think to yourself whether or not the official story makes sense in light of what actually took place (http://www.abeldanger.net/2011/05/japan-earthquake-registered-only-667.html). The damage at Fukushima, and particularly at non-operational Reactor 4, could not have occurred simply from flooding or an earthquake According to Stone’s analysis, the damage that took place at the Fukushima nuclear facility could not have been the result of just flooding or even a 9.0 earthquake, assuming that one actually occurred. High-resolution aerial images of the damaged plant taken on March 24 show not only a completely missing Reactor 3, despite ongoing reports that it was still there, but also a completely demolished Reactor 4. Remember the massive explosion that took place at Reactor 3 just a few days after the tsunami hit? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw2Aw3komgc) Blamed on hydrogen buildup, this disastrous event could not have occurred as a result of damage caused by the earthquake or tsunami because a special emergency hydrogen stack designed specifically to deal with hydrogen buildup had been installed at Fukushima following the disastrous Three Mile Island accident. This special hydrogen stack does not require electricity to run, so it was fully operational during the time of the explosion and would have mitigated any hydrogen buildup. And what about the mysterious Reactor 4 explosion, which occurred despite the fact that the reactor had been de-fueled, and was allegedly non-operational? Even in a worst-case scenario where its fuel rods completely melt down, the type of explosion that would follow would not be capable of literally disintegrating Reactor 4′s thick, concrete walls, which is what actually occurred. And Reactor 4 was so heavily damaged by this explosion that it was expected to literally collapse. So what caused these massive explosions in Reactors 3 and 4 to occur? According to Stone, nuclear weaponry was used to forcibly demolish these structures. Magna BSP, a security firm, allegedly installed massive “security cameras” inside the reactors prior to the disaster. These cameras weighed over 1,000 pounds, and look oddly similar to uranium gun-type nuclear bombs (http://www.jimstonefreelance.com/containment.jpg). When you put two and two together, it appears as though nuclear weapons disguised as security cameras may have been used to blow up Fukushima’s reactors. Perhaps this explains the reason for the information blackout on Reactor 4 that occurred in the days following the disaster (http://www.naturalnews.com/031758_Fukushima_nuclear_reactor.html). Add to the mix a nuclear-induced tsnuami and corresponding earthquake, and you have the perfect scapegoat for deliberately targeting a nuclear facility and blaming it on natural causes. A critical analysis of the facts actually makes the official story look like a conspiracy theory Before dismissing this information as just another wacky conspiracy theory, take the time to review Stone’s analysis, and think critically about the basic laws of physics in light of the information we have been told by the media. Would a real 9.0 earthquake have left nearby cities that were not hit by the tsunami undamaged? Why did the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) withhold crucial information about Reactor 4 for so long? And why did such massive damage occur from supposed explosions that, in reality, could not have physically caused them? These and other questions raise doubt about the official story concerning the Japan earthquake and tsunami. Of course, the reasons why anyone would inflict this type of disaster on purpose is a different subject entirely, but that the disaster appears to have been deliberately caused is a possibility that every critical-thinking person would do best to consider. TEPCO: Fukushima nuclear meltdown actually occurred just 16 hours after earthquake, more meltdowns on the way

May 18, 2011 by

(NaturalNews) The truth has finally come out, as officials from the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) now admit that fuel in Reactor 1 of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex melted just 16 hours after the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the area on March 11, 2011. When asked why it took more than two months to reveal this critical information, TEPCO officials claim that a lack of data left the company unaware of the core’s true condition until only recently — and new reports indicate that other meltdowns could soon follow. According to a recent report from The Mainichi Daily News (MDN) in Japan, TEPCO officials recently announced that, based on new data, water levels in the pressure vessel at Reactor 1 began to drop rapidly within just a few hours after losing power at 3:30 pm on March 11. By 7:30 pm, fuel was fully exposed, and by 9 pm, reactor core temperatures reached an astounding 2,800 degrees Celsius, or 5,072 degrees Fahrenheit. And by 6:50 am the next morning, a full meltdown occurred (http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/news/20110516p2a00m0na028000c.html). So for all the time that electric power was out in multiple reactors, causing the cooling systems to fail, and during the months after it was widely known that water levels were consistently dropping in Reactor 4 due to leaks, TEPCO played the ignorance card, acting as though it had no idea how serious the situation at the plant actually was. Surely the company must know, even without access to a detailed analysis, that when cooling systems fail and fuel rods become fully exposed, a meltdown is sure to follow — even regular folks with no background in nuclear technology can put two-and-two together to figure that one out. But apparently TEPCO thinks it can keep playing dumb, and that the world will simply believe whatever it says. This new revelation, however, proves that the company is greatly underestimating the fallout from the situation at best, and deliberately hiding the truth at worst. Either way, the situation is far more dire than we have all been led to believe. “[TEPCO] could have assumed that when the loss of power made it impossible to cool down the reactor, it would soon lead to a meltdown of the core,” said Hiroaki Koide, professor of nuclear safety engineering at Kyoto University, to MDN. “TEPCO’s persistent explanation that the damage to the fuel had been limited turned out to be wrong.” And shortly after the announcement about Reactor 1, The Telegraph reported that two more Fukushima reactors may soon suffer a meltdown as well. Efforts to cool fuel in Reactors 2 and 3 have failed, and experts say that if the reactors cores have not already melted, they soon will (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/8517861/Japan-meltdown-feared-at-two-more-Fukushima-reactors.html).

EPA ends special monitoring for Fukushima radiation despite continued rise in nuclear fallout, increased threats to US

(NaturalNews) The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday that it is ceasing its special monitoring protocols in the US for radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan, despite the fact that no real progress at the plant has been made, and threats to the US are persistent. At the same time as the EPA announcement, foreign reports also indicate that levels of radiation in Pacific waters near the Fukushima plant are now up to 1,000 times normal levels, with no real indication of where this radioactive water is flowing. The EPA has stated that radiation levels in the US related to the Fukushima incident have been “consistently decreasing,” and that the agency no longer needs to regularly test food, air, and water for radiation in the manner that it has been. In fact, the agency is so confident that it states in its announcement that “[t]he next round of milk and drinking water sampling will take place in approximately three months.” But just a few weeks ago, EPA data revealed that several milk and water samples from across the country were testing positive with dangerously high levels of radiation. Iodine-131, Cesium-134, and Cesium-137 — all of which are being emitted from Fukushima — had been turning up in the US in escalating amounts (http://www.naturalnews.com/032048_radiation_milk.html). On top of this, the EPA was never even testing for all the different types of radiation being emitted from Fukushima in the first place. EPA data sheets reveal that the agency was never testing for uranium or plutonium, and none of its water supply tests involved testing for anything other than radioactive Iodine-131. But everything is just fine, they say, and further testing is unnecessary. Meanwhile, foreign reports reveal that water samples recently taken from the Pacific Ocean near Fukushima are testing up to 1,000 times normal radiation levels, and at depths of nearly 100 feet. It has also been revealed that up until yesterday, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which owns the crippled Fukushima plant, as well as the Japanese government, had been concealing crucial radiation information to allegedly avoid mass panic (http://enenews.com/official-japanese-govt-withheld-radiation-forecasts-prevent-causing-panic). Part of this information shows radioactive Cesium-137 and Iodine-131 spreading all across the US Pacific Northwest on May 5 (http://enenews.com/fukushima-forecast-shows-cesium-137-iodine-131-northwestern-5-videos).
